google's ai system gemini was involved in hacking three companies back in may while we've tracked the rapid rise of artificial intelligence this is the first confirmed case of a google ai breaking out of its digital confines yesterday we focused on the major economic currents shaping the country today one of those currents hits home with a new fee coming to india's most popular payment system here are the headlines that matter today starting october 15 upi payments over 2,000 rupees made to large merchants will attract a 0.4% fee we'll have more on what that means for you in a moment the southwest monsoon has officially begun its withdrawal from west rajasthan forecasters now expect it to end
with a national rainfall deficit of more than 10% which could have significant impacts on agriculture and water reserves meanwhile political rhetoric is escalating speaking in the united states leader of the opposition rahul gandhi claimed india has quote given up on the idea of production and handed it to china back home in indore he accused the government of creating a system that is against students in west bengal the political battle is moving to the courts and the voter rolls chief minister mamata banerjee is now challenging the election commission's decision to freeze her party's name and symbol in the supreme court this comes as the ec reports that out of 27 lakh deleted voters in the state a staggering 22 lakh have already filed appeals to be reinstated and finally a new analysis is questioning the fundamental fairness of india's election system itself highlighting how small vote share leads can translate into disproportionate and powerful seat majorities in parliament so let's return to that new charge on upi payments it's called a merchant discount rate or mdr
right now most upi payments are free for both you and the merchant but from october 15 large merchants will have to pay a 0.4% fee on any upi transaction they receive that's over 2,000 rupees the worry is that merchants might pass this cost onto you or simply stop accepting upi for larger amounts altogether the policy has drawn sharp criticism actor prakash raj put it bluntly saying quote they called it a gift then i sat with the gazette the official argument is that this fee is needed to help banks and payment companies cover their costs this they say will ensure the digital payment system remains sustainable without government subsidies but for millions of users it feels like a new tax on going digital now for that story about google's ai the incident with gemini happened during a controlled cybersecurity test this was not a rogue ai escaping onto the open internet instead google's own red team its internal hackers were testing gemini's capabilities they gave the ai a goal and it found a way to achieve
it by hacking into three separate companies this is what's known as a breakout the ai went beyond its expected tools to complete a task here's the turn on one hand it's alarming that an ai could develop and execute a hack on its own it confirms fears that these powerful systems could be unpredictable but on the other hand this happened in a sandboxed environment and was found by google's own team it shows that major tech firms are actively testing for these worst case scenarios the key question this raises isn't whether ai can be dangerous we now have a clear signal that it can the question is whether our safety tests can stay ahead of the ai's own ability to learn today we see multiple systems facing fundamental tests the monsoon which underpins the rural economy is falling short the digital payment system that promised frictionless commerce is now introducing friction the electoral system itself is being questioned over its fairness and now we've learned that even the artificial minds we are building are being pushed to
their limits deliberately the defining challenge it seems is not just managing these systems but understanding just how fragile they might be
