The Reserve Bank of India makes its critical interest rate decision at ten A.M. today. In our last briefing, we talked about market insights; today is when those insights meet reality. The consensus is a rate hike, and that will affect everything from your home loan to the stock market. That’s our lead story. Also developing, Indian IT professionals have just secured a temporary but significant victory in the United States. Two district courts have blocked a controversial one hundred thousand dollar H-1B visa fee, providing relief to thousands of workers and the firms that employ them. We’ll cover both stories in detail. First, to the RBI. The Monetary Policy Committee concludes its meeting this morning, and the entire market is waiting.
There are three possible outcomes. First, a twenty-five basis point interest rate hike. Second, no change at all. And third, a hike larger than twenty-five basis points. So, why is a hike the most likely scenario? It comes down to two main pressures: inflation and liquidity. India’s inflation rose to four point eight two percent in August. That’s higher than the previous month, and a clear signal that prices are on an upward trend. At the same time, the banking system is flush with cash — a liquidity surplus of about four point six trillion rupees. Too much cash chasing too few goods is a classic recipe for inflation. The RBI’s primary job is to keep that in check. A quarter-point hike is so widely expected that many analysts say it's already "priced in" to the market.
Harshal Dasani at INVasset PMS says a hike to five point five percent is "no longer a surprise." This means if the RBI does exactly what’s expected, the stock market reaction will likely be muted. The real news would be a surprise. If the RBI decides to keep rates unchanged, one analyst, Avinash Gorakshkar, predicts we could see a "bull run on Dalal Street." The argument for holding steady is that inflation in the US is showing signs of easing, which takes some pressure off central banks around the world, including in India. But if the expected hike happens, you will feel it. Home loan EMIs on floating-rate plans are set to rise. Sectors that depend on borrowing, like real estate, automobiles, and infrastructure, will face higher costs.
On the other hand, cash-rich public sector companies like Coal India and ITC could actually benefit from higher yields on their massive cash reserves. Of course, a reminder that this briefing is general information, not financial advice. The key takeaway is that an expected hike isn't a sign of distress. It's a signal of DISCIPLINE, with the RBI defending its mandate against inflation. Now to our second major story, which affects India's global workforce. In the United States, two federal district courts have blocked the enforcement of a one hundred thousand dollar H-1B visa fee. This fee was proposed under the former Trump administration and would have been a massive financial barrier for companies hiring skilled foreign workers.
This ruling is a big deal for India. Last year, Indians received about fifty-seven thousand new H-1B visa approvals. That's nearly HALF of the entire global total. The tech sector, from giants like TCS and Infosys to smaller firms, relies heavily on this visa program to place talent in the US. The court's decision provides immediate, tangible relief. The judges in Massachusetts and California found the executive order creating the fee went beyond the administration's legal jurisdiction. It wasn't a ruling on the fairness of the fee, but on the power to create it. However, this is only temporary. The word from Washington is that legislative threats remain. One bill, the 'End H-1B Visa Abuse Act of 2026,' is still on the table.
Another proposal seeks to cut the maximum H-1B stay from six years down to just two. This legal victory is a welcome reprieve, but it doesn't resolve the long-term uncertainty. It comes at a time when new H-1B approvals for Indians have already fallen by twenty-eight percent in the last fiscal year, reflecting a broader tightening of US immigration policy. So, today’s headlines show two fronts. At home, the central bank is poised to act with measured discipline to manage the domestic economy. Abroad, Indian industry has won an important, if temporary, battle in a much longer campaign. In both arenas, the path forward is not about finding a clear and easy route, but about carefully navigating a complex and shifting landscape.
