Meta just launched an 816-billion-parameter model called Muse Spark Open. And they aren't just keeping it in the cloud. They’ve optimized it to run on a Mac. In our last episode, we focused on cutting through the hype to find the real shifts in AI. Today, we have two signals that demand your attention, coming from completely different directions. One is about pure intelligence. The other is about physical work. Both are happening now. First, the big one. Meta’s Muse Spark Open. It’s an open-weight model with a one-million-token context window. That is a massive workspace. It’s designed for advanced coding, multi-step reasoning, and building the next wave of AI agents.
Meta is explicitly positioning this as the most powerful open-weight model from a U.S. company, a direct challenge to competitors in China like Alibaba’s Moonshot AI. Second, the money. A startup called Origin just raised twenty million dollars to build robots that finish drywall. This isn’t a research project. This is physical AI, embodied AI, getting funded to go to work on actual construction sites. The round was co-led by Accel and Zacua Ventures, and the goal is to have one hundred fifty autonomous robots deployed by 2027. While Meta is building new minds, Origin is building new hands. These are the two stories that matter today.
Let’s go deeper on Meta’s Muse Spark Open. Because the headline number — 816 billion parameters — is not the most important part of this story. The important part is that it's a sparse model. Only 42 billion of those parameters are active at any one time. This is about efficiency. It’s how you get frontier-level performance without needing a power plant next to your datacenter. And you might not even need a datacenter. This is the real shift. Meta optimized Muse Spark Open to run locally on Apple’s M5 Ultra-powered Mac Studio systems. With up to one terabyte of unified memory, a developer can now run a world-class model directly on their desk.
Think about what that unlocks. No more API latency. No more paying per token for every test run. You can edit an open-source client or script a video in DaVinci Resolve with the AI running right there, on the same machine. This collapses the cost and complexity of building complex AI applications. Meta is also being incredibly aggressive on distribution. This isn’t a timid release. The model weights are available on Amazon SageMaker, Google Cloud Model Garden, Hugging Face, and Microsoft Foundry. You can access it through APIs on Baseten, Fireworks AI, Groq, Modal, and a half-dozen other platforms. They want this model to be EVERYWHERE.
They’ve even customized GPU kernels to boost performance, claiming up to a three-point-nine-five-X speedup on certain operations. This is a full-stack, ecosystem-level play to make Muse Spark Open the default choice for developers building serious AI agents. Now, let's talk about Origin. While Meta is fighting for dominance in the world of bits, Origin is fighting for the world of atoms. Twenty million dollars isn't a record-breaking venture round. But it's who the money is from and what it’s for. Accel is a top-tier firm. And the plan is specific: scale a fleet of autonomous construction robots. Their target is drywall finishing.
This is a perfect problem for automation. It’s a known bottleneck in construction — it’s repetitive, physically demanding, and requires a skilled touch that is hard to find. Origin isn't just building a robot; they are selling a solution to a labor shortage. And they have customers lined up. The plan includes pilots with two of the largest drywall finishing contractors in the United States. This isn't a demo in a lab. This is a commercial pilot on a real job site. They're also planning pilots in Germany, Sweden, France, and Saudi Arabia. This tells you the problem is universal, and Origin is building a global solution from day one.
So you have two major shifts happening at once. In one corner, the democratization of elite cognitive power, moving from the cloud to the desktop. In the other, the commercialization of physical robotic labor, moving from the factory floor to the construction site. One model is changing what’s possible on your desk. The other is changing what’s possible inside the walls of a new building. The AI landscape isn't just shifting — it's splitting into two very real, very different futures, and both of them just took a major step forward.
