OpenAI’s new model just scored a perfect one hundred percent on a cybersecurity benchmark designed to break it. In episode 161, we covered the start of September's model wars. Well, OpenAI just launched GPT-6 Astra, and it's their first model described as entering the "AGI era." It can find and exploit unknown security flaws without step-by-step human guidance. This is a new frontier for capability, and for risk. Here’s what else moved. First, the competition isn't sleeping. Anthropic dropped Claude Fable 5.1 on September first, a direct challenger to Astra. And the benchmarks? They're a mess. One firm puts Astra on top with a score of 169. Another, Artificial Analysis, says Claude is better. This isn't just a model war anymore, it’s a measurement war.
There is no single source of truth for which AI is "best." Second, the money is moving from software to raw infrastructure. Crusoe just raised over three billion dollars at a thirty billion dollar valuation. They're not building models. They're building gigawatt-scale data centers to power them. They also landed a thirteen billion dollar, five-year cloud contract with the trading firm Jane Street. That’s not venture capital. That is infrastructure capital. And it’s not just Crusoe. Broadcom expects its AI revenue to double, and then double AGAIN over the next two years, driven by custom chips. Gimlet Labs raised 300 million. Hivebotics raised six million for cleaning robots. Even a Belgian battery storage startup, Octave.energy, pulled in ten million euros.
The entire ecosystem is getting funded. Finally, the very nature of research is changing. A new report in Quanta Magazine shows AI systems are now solving mathematical problems that have stumped humans for decades, producing formal proofs faster than any person could. This isn't about AI assisting researchers. This is about AI forcing a re-evaluation of what a human researcher's role even is. Okay, let's go deeper on GPT-6 Astra. Because this is NOT just another model upgrade. OpenAI is calling it the start of the "AGI era" for a reason. The specs are staggering. It has a one-million-fifty-thousand-token context window. You can feed it up to 922,000 tokens of input — that's the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy — and get 128,000 tokens back.
It also has five different settings for "reasoning effort," which you pay more for. But the real story is that cyber capability. Scoring 100 percent on ExploitBench is unprecedented. It means the model can autonomously find and weaponize zero-day vulnerabilities. This capability is so critical that OpenAI is doing a staged rollout. The full, unrestricted version is ONLY available to organizations inside a new defensive-security program called Daybreak. Everyone else, all paying users, gets a version with the most dangerous offensive capabilities gated off. This is a fundamental shift in how frontier models are released. And here's the catch. Here's the thing you NEED to watch. For anyone using AI for compliance, or auditing, or anything that requires a paper trail… Astra changes the game.
It no longer logs its full reasoning steps. Instead, it provides a summary of its reasoning — a summary it chose to show you. As one analyst at ComputingForGeeks put it, "you are now logging a summary the model chose to show you, not the reasoning it did." The model is now a black box that describes its own behavior. That's a massive problem for transparency and trust. Now let's connect that capability explosion to the money. That three billion dollar raise for Crusoe isn't an outlier. It's the new baseline. They started out using stranded natural gas to mine crypto. Now they're building data centers on a scale that rivals national power grids. That thirteen billion dollar contract from Jane Street tells you everything.
Wall Street sees this compute power as essential infrastructure, like electricity or fiber optic cables. And it's driving the entire economy. Hancock Whitney Asset Management said in a webcast this month that technology capital investment, overwhelmingly in AI, accounted for seventy-five to eighty percent of ALL U.S. GDP growth in recent quarters. They said, "We haven’t seen anything like this in the U.S. economy in this century." So when you see OpenAI release a model it deems too powerful for the public, and you see Wall Street pouring tens of billions into the raw power to run it… you're not watching two separate stories. They are the same story. The age of AI as a software product is over. We are now in the age of AI as critical, and critically opaque, infrastructure.
