A company named Recursive just raised six hundred fifty million dollars at a four-point-six-five billion dollar valuation. It was founded by the people who built the AI programs at Google, Meta, and OpenAI. Last week, we covered the first AI-assisted zero-day exploit, a clear signal of AI as a weapon. Today’s news is the countermove — a massive bet on building AI that can safely improve itself. That six hundred fifty million dollar round isn’t an isolated event. It’s part of a much larger wave of capital chasing a new frontier. Nvidia is now partnering with Ineffable Intelligence, a UK startup that just raised a record one-point-one billion dollar seed round in April.
Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang is calling their focus — reinforcement learning — "the next frontier of AI". While the giants focus on foundational models, a new company called BasedAI has emerged from stealth with a platform to deploy autonomous AI agents directly into your workflow. Their COO says they are moving AI from a "chat experience to a doing experience." In the world of pure science, researchers in Switzerland have built an AI that creates "protein movies" — modeling molecules in full atomic detail, a breakthrough for drug discovery. And in the physical world, Mind Robotics took in another four hundred million dollars to put smarter robots on manufacturing floors, with Rivian providing a live factory for training.
Finally, Meta is responding to privacy fears by launching Incognito Chat, an AI with end-to-end encryption and no server logs. Mark Zuckerberg says not even Meta can read the conversations. Let's go back to Recursive and Ineffable Intelligence. These aren't just big funding rounds. They represent a fundamental pivot in the entire field. For the last few years, the race has been about scale — training ever-larger models on the entire internet. That’s what David Silver, the founder of Ineffable, calls "the easier problem of AI"... building systems that know all the things humans already know.
The new race is about solving the harder problem: building systems that can discover new knowledge for themselves. Recursive’s mission is to build AI that can recursively improve itself. An AI that runs experiments, learns from the results, and uses that knowledge to design the next, better version of itself. It’s an attempt to automate the process of scientific discovery and engineering innovation. Nvidia’s partnership with Ineffable is the other side of this same coin. They’re building the infrastructure for what Jensen Huang calls "superlearners" — systems that learn continuously from experience, through trial and error, not just from a static dataset.
This is reinforcement learning at a scale that was previously theoretical. It moves AI beyond being a mirror of human knowledge and starts to position it as an engine for generating novel solutions. This is the difference between reading every textbook ever written, and actually running a new experiment in a lab. When you see all this capital, all this talent from DeepMind, OpenAI, and Meta all moving in the same direction, the signal is clear. The era of AI as a simple knowledge-retrieval system is ending. The new objective isn't to build a better encyclopedia. It’s to build an autonomous scientist.
We are shifting from training models on the sum of human knowledge to building systems designed to push past its edge. The race is no longer about who has the biggest dataset of the past. It's about who can build the fastest engine for discovering the future.
