The Supreme Court of India has demanded answers from the Election Commission, after forty-seven lakh names vanished from Delhi's draft electoral rolls. In our previous episode, we tracked the court's scrutiny of medicine prices alongside Cyclone Arnab's landfall in Andhra Pradesh. That storm has now weakened inland, leaving three dead and forcing over fifty-five thousand people into relief camps across the state. Here are the confirmed national developments you need to know. Chief Justice Surya Kant has branded video-based digital arrest scams as "digital dacoity", urging law enforcement to punish perpetrators ruthlessly. The Union Cabinet has cleared a ten thousand crore rupee scheme to scale domestic shipping container manufacturing tenfold, aiming for seven hundred and fifty thousand units.
Overseas, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed twenty-two Indian nationals, including fourteen seafarers, have lost their lives in the widening West Asia conflict. And in biennial legislative council polls across four states, the Congress drew a blank, while the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies swept Karnataka and took five seats in Uttar Pradesh. Now, to the central dispute inside the Supreme Court. Advocate Prashant Bhushan submitted that roughly forty-three lakh voters were classified as permanently shifted or absent during Delhi's special intensive revision. Crucially, many never received enumeration forms. When these citizens sought restoration, the Election Commission instructed them to submit Form 6.
Form 6 is explicitly reserved for first-time voters. Justice Joymalya Bagchi made it clear that statutory forms cannot be altered on executive whim. Forcing veteran voters to enter the system as novices deprives them of an established mechanism to restore their rightful status. The bench will examine the Commission's controversial "logical discrepancy" classification at a later date. The question, of course, is why an administrative audit should place the burden of proof entirely on the citizen. While today's confirmed national news falls well short of a standard ten-item slate, the principle established in Delhi carries genuine weight. An electoral roll is not merely paperwork.
It's the baseline of democratic legitimacy, and stripping an enrolled citizen of their voting record without due notice cannot be cured with a fresh application form.
