On September third, 1928, a bacteriologist named Alexander Fleming got back from vacation to his notoriously messy lab at St. Mary's Hospital in London. It's the perfect setup for the kind of story we talked about last week, Admin—that potent mix of rivalry, obsession, and just pure, dumb luck that drives so many breakthroughs. Right. And in this case, the "luck" was a stray mold spore that had drifted in through an open window and landed on a petri dish full of staph bacteria he'd forgotten to clean up. Exactly. And everywhere else on the dish, the bacteria grew in a thick, opaque film. But around this one patch of fuzzy, greenish mold… there was a clear, dead zone.
A circle of nothing. Most people would have just thrown it out. Annoying contamination. But Fleming looked at it and his first thought was, reportedly, "That's funny." He realized the mold was secreting something that KILLED the bacteria. He called it "mould juice." "Mould juice." Not quite as catchy as penicillin. Not quite. He eventually named it penicillin, and he published a paper on it in 1929. But here’s the turn. He couldn't stabilize it. He couldn't purify it. And when he presented his findings… nobody cared. The scientific community basically shrugged. So for ten years, one of the most important discoveries in human history just… sits there.
It’s a footnote in a forgotten journal. It almost died. It almost did. Until a decade later, at Oxford University. A team led by an Australian pathologist, Howard Florey, and a brilliant, volatile German-Jewish refugee biochemist, Ernst Chain, stumble across Fleming's old paper. And these two were NOT like Fleming. Florey was this driven, ambitious, almost grim organizer. Chain was the temperamental genius. They didn't even particularly like each other. No, they didn't. But they shared an obsession. They saw the potential Fleming had missed—or, at least, the potential he couldn't unlock. They decided they were going to be the ones to isolate this "mould juice." And their work was just… grueling.
I mean, this is the "agony" part of the show title, right? They're trying to grow this finicky mold in anything they can get their hands on during wartime rationing. Hospital bedpans, biscuit tins, whatever. They even hired "penicillin girls" to manage the vats. And after months of this, they finally scraped together enough of a brownish, impure powder to test on a single human being. Albert Alexander. A 43-year-old policeman. And his initial injury was so… small. A scratch from a rose thorn in his garden. It got infected. Sepsis spread all over his body. Abscesses on his face, in his lungs. He was in the Radcliffe Infirmary, dying.
And they give him the penicillin. And what happens? A miracle. Within 24 hours, his fever drops. He starts eating. The infection starts to retreat. It’s working. It’s actually, unbelievably working. But then the nightmare starts. They run out. They run out. They had so little of it. They were literally collecting his urine, taking it back to the lab, and desperately trying to extract the unmetabolized penicillin to put back into his IV. But it wasn't enough. The bacteria came roaring back. And after five days, Albert Alexander died. Wow. To be that close… to see the cure and have it slip through your fingers. But that failure was also the proof, wasn't it?
It was EVERYTHING. It proved the drug worked in a human. They just needed more of it. A LOT more of it. And that tragedy is what convinced the British government, and then the American government, to go all-in. World War Two was raging, and infected wounds were killing more soldiers than bullets were. So that's when it goes from a lab curiosity to an industrial project. Florey flies to the U.S. with his sample. Right. To Peoria, Illinois, of all places. They find a better, more productive strain of the mold on a cantaloupe from a local market. And companies like Pfizer and Merck figure out how to mass-produce it in these huge, deep-fermentation tanks.
By D-Day in 1944, there was enough penicillin to treat every single wounded Allied soldier. It's such a clear example of that pattern we see over and over. Fleming had the Eureka moment—the spark. But it took the obsessive agony of Florey and Chain's team, and the crisis of a world war, to actually turn that spark into a fire that changed everything. It really makes you wonder, doesn't it? How many other life-saving "mould juices" are out there, sitting in forgotten journals, just waiting for the right kind of obsessive to come along?
