In World War One, if you were a soldier with a compound fracture, your chance of dying from infection was eighty percent. Eighty. Last week, we talked about the rivalries and obsessions that drive science, and today’s story is the absolute pinnacle of that. It's how we went from a death sentence to a simple shot. It all starts with a mistake. A happy accident. It’s 1928, and a bacteriologist named Alexander Fleming comes back from vacation to his London lab. And he’s famously messy, right? Famously. He finds one of his petri dishes, which was growing staphylococcus bacteria, has been contaminated by a mold. But around the mold… there’s a clear circle.
A zone of death where the bacteria couldn't grow. So he immediately knew he had a bacteria-killer on his hands. He knew the mold was a killer, yes. He called the substance it produced "mould juice" at first, then penicillin. But he couldn't isolate it. He couldn't make enough of it to matter. He published his findings in 1929, and for ten years… nothing. Wait—ten years? The discovery that would save millions of lives just sat in a journal? It was a scientific curiosity. A footnote. Until the late 1930s, when two scientists at Oxford, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain, started looking for a weapon against bacteria. The world was sliding toward war, and they knew what was coming.

They started injecting him with their tiny supply of penicillin. And it worked? It was a miracle. For a few days. His fever dropped, he started to recover… and then they ran out of the drug. The infection roared back, and he died. Oh, no. That’s devastating. It was. But it was also the proof they needed. The drug worked. They just needed an impossible amount of it. And this is 1941. Britain is being bombed. There’s no industrial capacity to spare.
So what did they do? Florey did something desperate. He flew to the United States, which wasn't yet in the war. He carried a small sample of the living mold in the pocket of his coat just to keep it alive and warm on the flight. He smuggled the secret to penicillin in his coat pocket. He did. He went to a government lab in Peoria, Illinois. They found a more productive strain of the mold on a cantaloupe from a local market, and American pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer and Merck went all-in. It became a national wartime project, like the Manhattan Project. A race to build a lifesaver instead of a world-ender. That's the perfect way to put it.
We see this pattern with wartime innovation all the time—jet engines, radar—but this was different. By D-Day in 1944, the Allies had 2.3 million doses of penicillin ready. It changed everything. That eighty percent mortality rate for a broken leg? It dropped to less than one percent. So Fleming makes the discovery, but it’s Florey and Chain’s obsession that actually gets it to the world. Fleming got the Nobel Prize, but it sounds like he was just the first chapter. He was the spark. But Florey and Chain built the fire. It’s a classic split in innovation—the person who sees the thing, and the people who see what the thing could become.
