China is testing a prototype truck-mounted nuclear reactor capable of generating ten megawatts of power. That’s enough to run a medium-sized AI data center from the back of a truck, and it signals a fundamental shift in how we should think about the global race for compute. This isn't just about who has the best chips; it's about who controls the power. That move toward energy independence is just one piece of a much larger strategy playing out this week. In semiconductors, the optical chipmaker Yuanjie saw its first-quarter profit soar over one thousand percent, driven by demand for AI data centers.

At the same time, the so-called "little Nvidia" of China, Cambricon Technologies, reported its revenue grew one hundred and sixty percent. This isn't just market growth; it's the result of a deliberate, state-backed push for self-reliance in the face of export controls. On the software front, Huawei's HarmonyOS now holds sixteen percent of the Chinese smartphone market, with over fifty-five million active installations. For years, the story was that China made the hardware but ran American software. That story is now ending. And this ecosystem extends all the way to culture.

Chinese producers are now using AI to create viral "micro dramas" in a single month, at one-fifth the previous cost. A South Korean competitor, Vigloo, is already shifting its budget to keep up, noting the competition is getting, quote, "ever more intense." Finally, back to energy. Alongside mobile nuclear reactors, Chinese scientists also unveiled an ultra-cheap "all-iron flow battery." It offers a grid-scale storage solution using iron, which costs over eighty times less than lithium, with virtually no capacity loss over thousands of cycles. The truck-mounted reactor and the all-iron battery are two sides of the same coin.

They solve the two biggest problems for an AI-powered state: generation and storage. One scientist called the reactor a "nuclear power bank," a solution to "battery anxiety" for data centers. Where have we seen this before? Think of military logistics. Armies need self-sufficient power for forward operating bases. China is now building the equivalent for its computational infrastructure. It's a plan to decouple its AI ambitions from the constraints of a traditional power grid, allowing it to place massive data centers anywhere. The analogy is clear: this is about projecting power, but the power is computational.

This hardware independence is mirrored in the semiconductor results. Cambricon and Yuanjie aren't just succeeding; they are thriving in a protected market, filling the vacuum left by US sanctions. The pattern twin here is the rise of Japan's auto and electronics industries in the nineteen seventies and eighties, which were nurtured by strong government industrial policy. But here's where the analogy breaks. Japan was a US ally, operating within the established global economic system. China is building an explicitly separate, parallel tech stack. It's not just about import substitution.

It's about ecosystem replacement. So while the world focuses on which company has the most advanced AI model, China is solving the less glamorous, more fundamental problems. It’s securing the entire supply chain. From the silicon that thinks, to the operating system that commands it, to the dedicated nuclear power plant on a truck that fuels it. The question is no longer just who can build the smartest machine. The question is becoming who can build a self-sufficient digital civilization. This week’s developments show that China isn't just competing in the race. It's building its own racetrack.
