on the final account statements the number was $64,000,000,000 for two decades that number represented success security and the genius of a wall street legend except the number was a fiction last week on fraud files we unmasked another of wall street's lies but the lie we're investigating today wasn't just a deception it was an entire fabricated universe built by one man the end began on 12/09/2008 in his new york office bernie madoff looked at his sons the two thousand and eight financial crisis had triggered a flood of withdrawal requests $7,000,000,000 money he did not have i'm running a ponzi scheme he told them and we're out of money
the air in the room must have gone still for his family for his investors the world had just cracked in two his sons walked out and alerted the authorities but this wasn't a story of 2008 it was a story that started decades earlier with a much smaller lie according to the fbi madoff made a bad trade and lost money for friends of his father-in-law he couldn't admit the failure so he started faking trades to cover it up supervisory special agent paul roberts said it just snowballed from there the money trail leads to an investment advisory business that was a master class in illusion madoff cultivated an image of exclusivity you had to know someone to
get in he served three terms as chairman of the nasdaq projecting an aura of unimpeachable trust his investors received meticulous account statements with trades that seemed to be cross referenced against real market data in the wall street journal it all looked real but behind the curtain on a separate floor of his firm employees like frank bongiorno were simply inventing the trades they were backdated fabricated to produce the steady impossible returns madoff promised to bolster the illusion madoff used real experts like david kugel a bond trader who lent the operation of veneer of legitimacy as one agent put it bernie knew he had to take care of these people because they knew what was going on
and for years no one stopped him that is the most critical part of the trail the warnings that were ignored the financial investigator harry markopoulos repeatedly sent detailed reports to the securities and exchange commission the sec proving the returns were mathematically impossible nothing happened at one point in the early nineties the sec ordered a major feeder fund to shut down this forced madoff to cover nearly $440,000,000 in withdrawals the fbi called it a massive fire drill he scrambled borrowing stock under false pretenses to secure a loan he survived the regulators got that close and then they walked away
the collapse when it finally came was swift the global financial meltdown of two thousand eight was the one force madoff couldn't control when investors spooked by the markets asked for their $7,000,000,000 back the music stopped there was no money the $64,000,000,000 in account balances was an invention the real investor losses were later calculated at over $18,000,000,000 on 06/29/2009 bernie madoff was sentenced to 150 in prison the maximum allowed he died there in 2021 but the story doesn't end with him it ends with the victims who lost everything it ends with the questions about a regulatory system that saw the smoke again and again but never found the fire and it ends with
those paper account statements physical proof of a lie that felt for so long like the absolute truth
