You get stability. You reduce the social inequalities that fuel conflict. So the resilience of a high-tech manufacturing plant in Texas is now directly linked to equitable water rights for a farming village in the Andes. That is the new reality of natural security. This all points to a massive shift in what energy diplomacy even means. For a century, it was a simple, brutal game: secure fossil fuels.
Get the oil. Protect the tanker routes. Now, it’s a complex, multi-front transition. Diplomats are no longer just negotiating oil prices; they're negotiating cross-border infrastructure for clean hydrogen. They’re scrambling to secure supply chains for lithium and cobalt. They're promoting green technology standards as a form of soft power. But don't think the old rules are gone. The standoff with Iran over the Strait of Hormuz is a stark reminder. Control over a shipping chokepoint is still a powerful weapon.
