The President of MIT, Sally Kornbluth, just admitted that about eighty percent of recent PhD graduates are so disillusioned they're actively trying to leave academia. The consensus building on Hacker News is that AI coding assistants… don't actually make you a better coder. In fact, for many, they do the opposite. One developer, a senior one, said that when they review code from an AI like Claude, ninety to ninety-five percent of the time, it’s a mess. It works, but it’s so verbose and convoluted that it takes them hours to simplify it. So the AI saves you thirty minutes writing, and costs your team three hours in code review and refactoring. The costs, as one person put it, "accrue interest." This isn't making us faster; it's just making us better at creating technical debt.

Then there's the privacy story that is just… visceral. A user posted about their new 2024 Toyota RAV4 hybrid. They were so concerned about telemetry—the car reporting everything back to Toyota—that they physically removed the modem and the GPS unit. Ripped them right out. The problem? As the discussion pointed out, that’s not even enough. If you connect your phone via Bluetooth, or even a wire for CarPlay or Android Auto, the car can still route its data through your phone's connection. Apple and Google still get the data. There's a real sense of futility, that the only winning move is not to play, but you can't exactly opt out of having a car.

And that feeling of being trapped in a broken system brings us back to that MIT story. President Kornbluth wasn't just saying PhDs are unhappy. She was diagnosing a systemic failure. The median science PhD now takes six years. Six years of what she called "grueling work for terrible pay." We’re talking about forty-seven hundred dollars a month for a PhD student at MIT's electrical engineering and computer science department. And for what? Bleak job prospects in a flooded market. Eighty percent want out. Think about that. These are the people who, five or six years ago, were the most passionate, the most dedicated to a life of research. And the system broke them. Finally, and this one feels almost biblical, the USDA is projecting the smallest US wheat harvest since nineteen seventy-two.

Nineteen seventy-two. The immediate cause is a massive drought across the Plains, but that’s only half the story. The other half is pure economics. Farmers are planting less wheat because they can make more money planting soybeans and corn. It’s more profitable, plain and simple. So you have a situation where the crop was already marginal because of market forces, and then the climate delivered the knockout punch. It's a perfect storm of economics and ecology, and it means the price of bread, of pasta, of everything… is about to get a lot more volatile. Okay, I want to go back to two of those. The AI coding problem, and the crisis in academia. Because they feel like two sides of the same coin.

A story about what happens when we optimize for speed over substance, and what happens when we neglect the very systems designed to create substance in the first place. Let's start with the AI. For the last two years, the promise has been the "10x engineer." The idea that a developer armed with an AI co-pilot could do the work of ten people. It was the ultimate productivity hack. But what if the reality is that AI makes you a 10x editor? And a really stressed-out one at that. That comment from the senior developer is the key. "WOW it works but too much code dude, let's take 3 hours to handhold you through simplifying it." The AI isn't a collaborator. It's a hyper-productive but clueless intern.

It gets the job done, but with zero sense of elegance, maintainability, or long-term consequence. It just smashes code together until the test passes. For a senior developer, this is annoying but manageable. They have the experience to see the mess and fix it. But what about a junior developer? This is the part that genuinely worries me. If you’re just starting out, and the AI spits out a hundred lines of code that works, you don't have the context to know it could have been done in ten. You don't learn the craft. You learn to prompt, and you learn to trust the magic black box. You're not learning to be an architect; you're being trained as a janitor for the AI's messes. And your confidence plummets, because you never feel like you actually built it.

You just cleaned it up. So where have we seen this before? This is the ghost of Dreamweaver. Remember WYSIWYG web editors in the late 90s? They promised anyone could build a website. And they did! But they did it by creating horrifying, bloated, table-based layouts that were impossible to maintain. They gave you the illusion of control, but the code underneath was a nightmare. A professional would have to come in, throw it all out, and start from scratch. The AI is doing the same thing. It's generating code that looks fine on the surface but is structurally rotten. The analogy breaks down in one terrifying way, though. With Dreamweaver, the feedback loop was slow. With AI, it's instant. The temptation to just accept the "good enough" solution is immense, and the mountain of technical debt we're creating is going to be visible from space.

So if our assembly line for producing code is getting faster but less reliable… what about our pipeline for producing deep, original thinkers? That brings us back to MIT. The problem isn't just that eighty percent of PhDs want to leave academia. It's why. The system is no longer a path to intellectual discovery for many; it's an exploitative labor arrangement. The median PhD takes six years. During that time, you're not just working on your brilliant dissertation. You're grading undergrad papers. You're running errands for your advisor. One person in the discussion mentioned their PhD advisor delegating peer review work and even the first drafts of other papers to them. It’s cheap, highly-skilled labor, completely disconnected from your own research.

And for this, you get paid less than a first-year associate at a consulting firm, all while living in one of the most expensive cities in the country. You do this for six years, accumulating debt, watching your friends in industry buy houses and start families. And you do it for the promise of a job at the end. Except the jobs aren't there. So what's the pattern here? This is the intellectual equivalent of a company town. Think of those old mining towns where the company owned your house, the general store, the bar. They controlled every aspect of your life. For a PhD student, the university is your employer, your landlord, your credentialing body, and your entire social world. The power imbalance is staggering.

And just like when the mine runs out of coal, when the academic job market collapses, the whole town empties out. You have thousands of brilliant people with hyper-specialized skills, a mountain of debt, and a profound sense of betrayal. The dream they were sold—a life of the mind—was just a marketing slogan for a broken business model. And the rest of us, who rely on the research and innovation that comes out of these institutions, we're the ones who will ultimately pay the price for that broken promise. So what connects a disillusioned PhD student, a frustrated software developer, a privacy-conscious driver, and a struggling wheat farmer? It’s the bill coming due for our obsession with a certain kind of progress.

A progress defined by immediate efficiency, convenience, and short-term profit. The AI promises to make us code faster, but it erodes our craft and our confidence. The university system promises to produce experts, but it burns them out before they even begin. The connected car offers seamless features, but the price is constant surveillance we can't even escape by physically ripping parts out of the dashboard. The agricultural market rewards planting the most profitable crop, right up until a single drought threatens a staple food supply for millions. In every case, we are optimizing for the thing we can measure right now—lines of code, published papers, quarterly profits—at the expense of the things that are harder to measure but infinitely more important: resilience, craftsmanship, privacy, and human potential.

We're building incredibly complex, powerful systems that are also brittle, fragile, and spiritually exhausting. We're getting really good at solving today's problems with tomorrow's disasters.
