A delegation of scientists from Yale University traveled to New York in August of 1835 to get a look at the proof. The proof of life on the Moon. This wasn't some fringe belief; it was the story everyone was talking about, and it reminds me of what we saw with the Dancing Plague in Strasbourg. Remember that? A contagious physical frenzy. Well, it turns out a contagious idea can spread just as fast, and you don't even have to leave your house. So. Here's the setup. The New York Sun was a new kind of paper — a penny press. Cheap, sold on the street, and desperate for readers. They needed a hit. On August twenty-fifth, 1835, they published the first of six articles that supposedly reprinted a discovery from the Edinburgh Journal of Science.
The source? The world-famous astronomer Sir John Herschel, who had allegedly built a telescope of IMMENSE power in South Africa. A telescope so powerful it could see objects on the lunar surface as if they were a hundred yards away. The first articles were just a tease. New species of plants. A beach of pristine white sand. Then they saw animals. First, something like a bison, but with a fleshy veil over its face to protect it from the light. Okay. Then, blue unicorns. Seriously. The article describes them as looking like goats, but with a single horn. The city ate it up. The Sun's circulation exploded.
Everyone wanted to know what Herschel saw next. And then came the big one. The final installment. Through the lens of this fantastical telescope, they saw them. Humanoids. Beings that walked upright, with copper-colored hair and... wings. They were described in incredible detail, these "Vespertilio-homo," or bat-men. The paper reported they were innocent and happy, gathering in groups, gesturing to each other. The public went absolutely wild. People weren't just reading it; they were BELIEVING it. This is when the Yale scientists packed their bags. Religious groups started taking up collections to send missionaries to the moon.
For five weeks, the Great Moon Hoax was the biggest story in the world. So, where have we seen this before? It’s almost too easy, right? You hear "viral misinformation" and you immediately think of Facebook memes or deepfakes on Twitter. And yes, the pattern is there. A story that’s too good to check, feeding a deep-seated desire for wonder, or for confirming a bias. The New York Sun needed circulation numbers; today's algorithms need engagement. The economic incentive is EXACTLY the same. But here’s where the analogy gets tricky, and where it really tells you something. The Great Moon Hoax eventually collapsed under its own weight.
The author, Richard Adams Locke, a reporter for the Sun, later admitted it was a satire meant to mock speculative science. But the Sun itself? It never issued a retraction. Not once. It just... let the story fade. And its circulation, which had skyrocketed, never went back down. They got what they wanted. Today, the speed is different. A hoax like that would be debunked on social media in hours, if not minutes. The real Sir John Herschel, who was totally unaware of any of this in South Africa, would have his agent issue a statement. The debunking would itself go viral. But here’s the problem. The debunking never reaches everyone who saw the original lie.
The correction is always playing catch-up to a story that was more fun to believe. We think we're more sophisticated now, with our fact-checkers and our digital literacy. But the Moon Hoax shows that the vulnerability isn't in our technology. It’s in our appetite. We want to believe in the unbelievable. We want to think someone has a telescope powerful enough to show us a universe more magical than our own. The Sun didn't sell people a lie. It sold them a sense of wonder for a penny. And that business model has never gone out of style.
