Okay, get this. In 1956, loading a cargo ship cost five dollars and eighty-six cents a ton. By the end of the century, it was SIXTEEN cents a ton. It reminds me of what we saw last time with London's Great Stink—how a totally physical, unglamorous problem like a toxic river can force a change so big it rewrites the rules for everyone. Today, the random spin of the globe landed us on a topic that looks just as boring, and is ten times more consequential: the shipping container. Before the 1950s, a port was organized chaos. Think thousands of longshoremen, crawling over a ship for days, sometimes weeks. They were moving individual sacks of coffee, crates of whiskey, barrels of oil, loose lumber.
Every single item was handled by a person, multiple times. It was slow, it was expensive, and a ton of stuff got stolen or broken. They called it break-bulk cargo, and the "break" part was literal. A ship might spend more time in port being loaded and unloaded than it actually spent at sea. The whole system was a bottleneck. Sound familiar? It’s the physical world’s version of a dial-up modem. His first ship, the Ideal X, sailed from Newark to Houston in April 1956 with fifty-eight containers on its deck. And it just… worked. The port costs just plummeted. A whole way of life, gone. Then it changed the shape of our cities. Without the humble, boring, standardized metal box, that entire economic model is impossible. It just doesn't work.
