In June of 1858, the scientist Michael Faraday took a boat onto the River Thames and started dropping pieces of white card into the water. He wanted to see how far they would sink before they vanished into the filth. They disappeared in less than an inch. Last time, we talked about London getting hit by a wave of beer in 1814—a sudden, violent flood. This was the opposite. This was a crisis that had been building for decades, and in the summer of '58, it finally became… unbearable. The Great Stink had arrived.

The smell was the first thing. A putrid, overwhelming wave of human waste, industrial effluent, and rotting animal carcasses, all baking in the summer sun. For centuries, London’s waste went into cesspits under houses. But the great Victorian invention—the flush toilet—made everything a thousand times worse. Suddenly, hundreds of thousands of homes were piping their raw sewage directly into the city's old storm drains, which were never designed for it. And where did those drains empty? Straight into the Thames.

The river became a city-sized open sewer. And then cholera hit. Wave after wave. The leading theory at the time was "miasma"—the idea that the disease was carried on the foul air itself. They thought you could breathe cholera. They were wrong, of course—it was in the water they were drinking—but their terror of the smell is what finally forced a change. By that summer, the stench from the river was so powerful that the brand new Houses of Parliament, right on the riverbank, became uninhabitable.

They were soaking curtains in chloride of lime, trying to block out the air. Business in the city ground to a halt. You couldn't escape it. The crisis was no longer an abstraction for the poor—it was literally in the air the most powerful people in the empire were breathing. So what happens when a government can no longer govern because of the smell? They act. Fast. In a stunning move, Parliament, led by Benjamin Disraeli, pushed through a bill in just eighteen days to fix the problem, cost be damned.

They handed the job to an engineer named Joseph Bazalgette. And Bazalgette’s plan wasn't just to build bigger sewers. It was genius. He designed an interceptor system. Imagine the Thames running through the city. Instead of letting all the smaller sewers dump into it, he built massive new trunk sewers running parallel to the river, on both sides. These interceptors would catch the flow from every street, every drain, before it ever reached the river. They’d carry it all, by the gentle power of gravity, miles downstream, far east of the city, where it would be dumped into the estuary on the outgoing tide.

It was a gutter system for the entire metropolis. This is a pattern we see again and again, isn't it? A slow-burn crisis is ignored for decades until it becomes so acute, so physically unavoidable, that it forces a society to make a hundred-year investment. It’s the same logic that built the American Interstate Highway System in the 1950s—a response to a perceived crisis of national defense and mobility. Bazalgette's project was just as monumental. Eighty-two miles of massive, brick-lined interceptor sewers.

One thousand, one hundred miles of new local street sewers to connect to them. It was one of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th century, all built by hand, underground. And here’s the most incredible part. They built the entire system to solve the smell of disease. They accidentally solved the disease itself. By cleaning the river, they cleaned the city’s main source of drinking water. The cholera epidemics that had terrorized London for a generation... they just stopped. They got the right answer for the wrong reason.

So where does the analogy break down when we look at our crises today? The Great Stink was democratic in its misery. The rich and the powerful smelled it just as much as the poor. It was an immediate, sensory assault. Many of our modern slow-burn crises—climate change, microplastics in the ocean, biodiversity loss—they don't have that same visceral trigger. You can't smell carbon dioxide. You can't feel the hole in the ozone layer on your skin. The feedback loop is broken. Next time you see a picture of London, look for the Victoria Embankment—that beautiful stone walkway and park that runs along the north side of the Thames.

That’s not just a riverbank. That’s the roof of Joseph Bazalgette's masterpiece. It’s the hidden monument to the idea that sometimes, the only way out of a disaster… is to build your way straight through it.
