It was sewage. Welcome to the Great Stink. For generations, London had treated the River Thames as its personal toilet. But the city had grown too big, too fast. And ironically, a symbol of progress—the newfangled flush toilet—was the tipping point. They would use gravity to carry the waste east, out of the city, to two gigantic pumping stations—Abbey Mills and Crossness—which were these stunning, ornate pieces of Victorian ironwork that looked more like palaces than industrial buildings. From there, the sewage would be pumped out into the estuary, far away from the city's water supply. This is London’s Apollo Program. I’m not exaggerating. Think about the pattern. You have a clear, undeniable, existential crisis.
For the US in the sixties, it was the Soviets beating them into space. For London in 1858, it was the threat of being wiped out by cholera. The response is the same: a massive mobilization of national will, money, and engineering genius on a scale never before attempted. Bazalgette was given a budget of three million pounds—an absolutely colossal sum then—and told to just… fix it. The analogy holds because this wasn't just a repair job. It was a leap forward. It was building infrastructure for a future you can't yet see.
Bazalgette famously said, "Well, we're only going to do this once and there's always the unforeseen," and he doubled the diameter of the pipes he calculated they would need. That single decision is why his system is still serving London over one hundred and sixty years later. But here’s where the analogy breaks. Bazalgette had the grim advantage of a crisis that was impossible to ignore. You can’t spin a smell that makes you vomit. You can't form a committee to debate whether the river is full of human waste.
