Jimbo Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, has a personal quality control check he calls the "Random pages test." The idea is simple. You just click the "Random article" link on the site's sidebar, over and over, and you see what you get. He says every time he does it, the conclusion is unambiguous: Wikipedia is getting better. And sure, you can see it. You hit the button and instead of a stub about a village with a population of twelve, you get a deeply sourced article on, say, the history of marine chronometers. Or a biography of a 15th-century female painter you’ve never heard of. It’s an incredible testament to this chaotic, collaborative project. But here's the turn. Reading isn't the only way to consume information anymore.
It's not even the primary way for a lot of people, a lot of the time. Think about it. Eighty-eight percent of TikTok users say sound is essential to the experience. That platform's deadpan, robotic AI voice isn't a bug—it’s a feature. It’s a whole comedic and narrative style. So the next question becomes obvious. What happens when the world’s biggest encyclopedia gets a voice? For years, Wikipedia has had a project called "Spoken articles." Volunteers—actual humans—would record themselves reading articles aloud. It’s a great idea, a noble effort. But it's not scalable. You can't have volunteers keep up with millions of articles that are constantly being updated. You end up with a tiny fraction of the site available as audio, much of it outdated.
It was an artisan solution for an industrial-scale problem. But that's changing. Right now. The same modern AI voice technology that powers TikTok's narrator is being pointed at Wikipedia. The goal is to create natural-sounding spoken versions of articles at scale. Not just a few hundred. Not a few thousand. All of them. Think about what that means. The best AI tools, the ones driving this, aren't magic. They're just really, really good at turning speech into structure. And structure is the backbone of story. They can identify quotes, add inflection, pause in the right places. They're getting good enough that the voice itself disappears, and you're left with the information, flowing directly into your brain while you're driving, or washing dishes, or going for a run.
Where have we seen this before? This feels like the printing press. Genuinely. Before Gutenberg, knowledge was locked in manuscripts, handwritten by scribes, accessible only to a tiny elite who could both read and physically get to the monastery library. The press didn't invent new knowledge; it just unlocked the format. It made text distributable, cheap, and accessible. We are at a similar moment. So much of our collective knowledge is locked in text. That's a barrier if you're visually impaired, or have dyslexia, or if you just spend two hours a day commuting. AI-driven audio isn't about replacing reading. It's about breaking the lock on the format. It’s making the entirety of human knowledge accessible in a new dimension.
The analogy isn't perfect—an AI voice will never have the soul of a performance by a great narrator. But that’s not the point. This isn't art; it's utility. It's infrastructure. Jimbo’s random page test proves the library is growing. But this proves the walls of the library are dissolving. It’s not a place you go to anymore. It's a voice in your ear, ready to tell you about anything you can imagine.
