The world uses enough concrete every two years to build a city the size of New York. Every single building, road, and bridge. And that number is accelerating. It’s the ultimate example of what we were talking about last week in Episode 5—the unseen giants. Fertilizer feeds the world, but concrete literally holds it up. It’s so ubiquitous you don’t even see it. It’s just… the ground. The walls. It’s the default material for civilization. How did that happen? Was there a single moment where it took over? There were two, separated by about seventeen hundred years. The first was the Romans. They didn't invent it, but they perfected it for their time. They mixed volcanic ash—pozzolana—with lime and water.

That mixture created a concrete so durable that structures like the Pantheon in Rome are still standing, two thousand years later. Its dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome. Wait, unreinforced? So no steel beams inside? Nothing. Just Roman concrete. But after Rome fell, the recipe was largely lost. For centuries, we built with stone and brick and wood. The world sort of... forgot how to make great concrete. That feels like a pattern we see over and over. A foundational technology appears, gets lost, and then has to be rediscovered from scratch. Exactly. And the rediscovery, the second big moment, came in 1824. An English bricklayer named Joseph Aspdin patented a new process.

He heated clay and limestone until they combined, then ground it into a fine powder. When mixed with water, it hardened into a stone-like material. He called it Portland cement because it looked like the stone quarried on the Isle of Portland. And that’s the stuff we use today. That’s the stuff. It was cheap, it was incredibly strong, and you could make it anywhere. You didn't need a specific type of volcanic ash. You just needed common clay and limestone. That invention is what enabled the modern world. Skyscrapers, dams, highways, airport runways… none of it is possible without Portland cement. It’s like the invention of a standardized protocol for the physical world.

Like TCP/IP for the internet, but for building things. A simple, repeatable recipe that lets everyone, everywhere, connect things together reliably. That’s a great way to put it. And the analogy holds because both are invisible infrastructure. You don't think about the protocol, you think about the website. You don't think about the concrete, you think about the building. But the analogy breaks down in a critical way. Where? The cost. The chemical process of making cement is incredibly energy-intensive. It accounts for something like eight percent of global carbon dioxide emissions. Eight percent? That’s more than the entire aviation industry. By a lot.

So this invisible material that underpins our entire modern existence is also one of the single largest drivers of climate change. We’ve built a world we can’t imagine living without, using a material we can’t seem to live with. So we’re surrounded by it, dependent on it, but it carries this massive, hidden environmental debt. It’s the foundation of our stability and also a source of our instability. And unlike software, you can't just patch it. A city isn't a codebase you can refactor. The concrete is already poured. Billions and billions of tons of it. It’s permanent. We've talked before about industries that operate on a geological timescale. This feels like the ultimate example.

We’re making decisions with this material that will last for centuries, but creating problems we need to solve in the next few decades. And we keep pouring more every day. The scale is just… staggering. We are, quite literally, building our own trap. So what does it look like to try and escape a trap that you, yourself, have built to be indestructible?
