There are more than 1.8 billion wooden pallets in service across the United States every single day. And something like ninety percent of ALL products we buy move on them at some point. It's an incredible number. It really is. You know, it reminds me of what we discussed in our last episode on concrete. It's this other invisible giant—an architecture that underpins everything, but that we never, ever see. It's the perfect comparison. The pallet is the silent, unsung hero of the supply chain. And the story of how it got there is really the story of how our modern world got so efficient. It didn't just appear out of nowhere.

Okay, so where did it come from? Well, you can't really tell the story of the pallet without talking about its twin: the forklift. The forklift gets invented around 1920. And all of a sudden, you have this amazing machine that can lift and stack heavy things. But what, exactly, is it supposed to lift? Ohhh, right. You need a platform. You need a platform. Before that, loading a truck or a rail car was just… organized chaos. You had teams of people hauling individual sacks, crates, barrels. It was slow, it was back-breaking, and it was wildly inefficient. The pallet lets you turn a hundred different items into one single object.

That concept—the "unit load"—is the whole revolution. So, the first pallets are just simple wooden skids, basically? Pretty much. But that leads to the next problem. If my pallet is a different size than your pallet, and the next warehouse uses a third size… the whole system breaks down. Your forklift might not fit, or it won't stack on the racks. So you need a standard. You DESPERATELY need a standard. And that's the next big leap. It came from the Grocery Manufacturers Association—the GMA. They're the ones who created the standard 48-by-40-inch pallet that became the default for North America. And once you have that, everything else can be built around it.

Exactly. Now, every forklift, every warehouse bay, every semi-trailer is designed to fit that specific footprint. It creates a predictable grid for the entire physical economy to move on. So here's where we've seen this before. It's the same pattern as standardizing railroad gauges, or shipping containers, or even something like a USB plug. The object itself is simple, but the agreement on the object is what unlocks its power. The agreement is EVERYTHING. That's the monumental achievement. It allows for the seamless, predictable flow of goods across the entire continent. That simple wooden grid is the foundation for it all.

Which brings up a question for me. Why are they still, you know… wood? It feels so low-tech. We have plastics, composites, everything else. It comes down to two things, really: cost and repairability. Wood is cheap. So the upfront cost is low, which matters when you need billions of them. But more importantly, when a forklift driver inevitably spears one and breaks a board… Which I assume happens a lot. All the time. But you just pry off the broken board and nail on a new one. The pallet goes right back into service. You can't do that with a cracked plastic pallet. You just have to recycle it. Huh. So the low-tech nature is actually its biggest strength.

It's a huge part of its resilience. I mean, it’s a thirty-one-billion-dollar industry in the U.S. alone. And then you get another layer of innovation, like pallet pooling, which a company called CHEP pioneered back in 1958. Companies started renting pallets from a shared pool instead of owning them. So they became these reusable assets, just constantly circulating through the economy. A shared, invisible infrastructure. It's this simple object that determines whether goods move on time, at cost, and in good condition. It's easy to forget that our entire, complex, just-in-time world is still riding on something as simple as a few planks of wood.

It's almost funny. For all our talk of logistics software and automation, the whole system could grind to a halt without enough of them. It always comes back to the basics, doesn't it? The most powerful forces are almost always the ones we've learned to stop seeing.
