The only legitimate child of the poet Lord Byron was not a poet herself, but the world's first computer programmer. Last week, hearing Harriet Tubman describe the secret networks of the Underground Railroad, we were reminded that so much of history happens in the shadows. Tonight's guest lived a very different life, but her work also remained unrecognized for more than a century. Welcome, Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace. It is a pleasure to be here. And please, call me Ada. Ada. Your father was... well, he was Lord Byron. A figure of immense poetic celebrity and scandal.

Yet your mother, Lady Byron, steered you away from poetry and pushed you into mathematics. Was that a rebellion against his legacy? My mother was terrified of what she called the "Byronic madness." She believed that a rigorous, logical education in mathematics would be an antidote to any inherited... volatility. She saw it as a choice between two worlds. I never did. How do you mean? I called my approach "poetical science." I saw mathematics as a language capable of expressing the great truths of the universe, just as poetry expresses the truths of the human heart.

They are not opposites. They are different modes of observation. And that perspective led you to Charles Babbage. You met him when you were just seventeen, and he was demonstrating a part of his Difference Engine. Yes, on June fifth, 1833. A crowded room. Most people saw a clever machine, a curiosity. I saw... a future. Charles was a brilliant mind, the father of the engine, but his focus was on its power for numerical calculation. He saw a machine that could produce flawless mathematical tables. But you saw something else entirely. I saw the Analytical Engine.

His next, much grander design. It was a general-purpose machine. I realized that if you could represent things with symbols—numbers, letters, musical notes—then the engine could operate on them. It could process not just numbers, but reality itself. It could weave algebraic patterns, just as the Jacquard loom weaves flowers and leaves. So you're saying, back in the 1840s, you envisioned a machine that could compose music? Create art? If the fundamental relations of pitched sounds in the science of harmony could be expressed and adapted to the engine's notation...

yes. It could compose elaborate pieces of any degree of complexity. It would not be creating the music from nothing, but it would be executing the rules of composition we provided it. That is... an extraordinary leap. To go from a calculator to a composer. But you also drew a very clear line. You wrote that the engine "has no pretensions whatever to originate anything." It cannot. It can only do what we know how to order it to perform. Its power is as a tool. It extends the reach of human intellect; it does not replace it. The engine is a collaborator, not a creator.

It follows rules. It does not invent them. So even as you saw this incredible potential, you also saw its fundamental limit. That is not a limit. It is the entire point. The magic is not in the machine, but in our ability to translate our own complex, creative, "poetical" ideas into a precise language that the machine can execute. The art is in the instruction. So if there's one thing we should take away from your work, from your vision... what is it? That the most powerful engine is not made of brass and pewter. It is the human imagination. Our machines are merely a reflection of our ability to describe the world to them.

The future does not belong to the machine that can think, but to the person who can tell it what to do with the most poetry.
