Researchers at Michigan State University found that your brain reacts differently to a mistake based on one thing: whether you believe you can learn from it. That’s not a fixed trait. It’s a choice. A muscle you can build, starting today. Right now. So let this be the first choice you make. The first deliberate thought of your morning. Take a breath. Let it go. And repeat this after me. Silently, or out loud. Whatever makes it feel true. My worth is not on the line today. It is not up for debate. It is not tied to my performance, my productivity, or anyone’s approval.

It is a given. I start from a place of absolute value. Today, my goal is not to be perfect. My goal is to make progress. One percent better is a victory. One small step forward is the whole game. I will look for that step, and when I take it, I will count it. I will celebrate the effort, not just the final outcome. The messy, difficult, necessary effort. Because that is where the growth happens. I give myself permission to not know the answer. I am allowed to ask for help. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness—it is a sign of strength. It shows I am more committed to the goal than to my own ego.

I give myself permission to be a beginner, even at something I have done a thousand times. The world changed since yesterday. I changed since yesterday. I can approach this with fresh eyes. When I make a mistake—and I will make a mistake—I will not treat it as a failure. I will treat it as feedback. It’s just data. An error is a signpost. It is the world telling me, “Not this way. Try another.” I will thank it for the information, and I will adjust my course. I will not use it as a weapon against myself. That negative voice in my head… the critic… is not the voice of truth.

It is the voice of fear. Today, I will not confuse the two. When I hear that voice, I will acknowledge it. I will see it. And I will let it pass. I will speak to myself with the same kindness I would offer to a friend who is struggling. I will offer myself that same compassion. Because my progress, not my perfection, defines my path. Every challenge is a chance to learn something new about myself. About the problem. About the world. I am here to learn. I am built to adapt. This is the work. Not the emails, not the meetings, not the deadlines. This is the real work.

The choice to learn. The choice to be kind to myself in the process. The choice to see progress where others only see perfection or failure. Yesterday’s scoreboard is wiped clean. The person you were when you fell asleep is not the person who is awake right now. You get to decide what this day is about. You get to decide who you are in it. Your value was never in question. Only your attention was. So point it where it matters.
