Neuroscientists can see gratitude on a brain scan. It lights up the medial prefrontal cortex — the part of your brain tied to learning and making better decisions. In our last episode, we talked about grounded self-compassion, about meeting yourself with kindness. Today we take that same principle — that it has to be REAL — and we turn it outward. We’re going to build a practice of gratitude that isn't about pretending or wishing. It's about noticing. It's about finding the things that are true, and holding them close.

Are you ready? Let’s start. There are five of them. Five anchors for your morning. Say them with me, and really try to feel them. First. I am grateful for my body, for the simple mechanics of being alive. Take a breath. Feel that? That’s what this is about. Not about how your body looks, not about its performance, not for whether it’s sick or well or tired. It’s gratitude for what it can DO. The fingers that are about to wrap around a warm mug of coffee or tea. The eyes that are open and taking in the light. The feet that are about to touch the floor and hold you up for whatever comes next.

This isn’t about loving your body. It's about being in awe of the machine itself. The fact that it works at all is a quiet, daily miracle. Start there. Okay, second one. Say it. I am grateful for one simple, perfect thing that is already here. This isn't about manifesting some grand future. This is about opening your eyes to what is right in front of you. Right now. Maybe it’s the specific slant of light coming through your window. Maybe it’s the deep, unbroken silence in the house before the world wakes up. Maybe it’s the taste of clean water, or the weight of a blanket on your legs.

Find ONE thing. Don’t list them. Just find one. That small, good thing costs you nothing, and it is entirely yours in this moment. That’s your anchor. Hold onto it. Number three is about connection. Say this with me. I am grateful for the last person who made me laugh. Notice how specific that is. We’re not doing a generic "I'm grateful for my friends and family." No. Get specific. Who was it? Picture their face. Hear their voice in your head. Replay the moment. Remember the feeling of that laugh, that sudden, uncomplicated burst of shared joy.

Gratitude for connection isn't an abstract idea. It's a memory you can feel in your bones. That feeling is real. It happened. And you can carry the warmth of it into your day. Alright, here's the turn. The hard one. Stay with me on this. Say it. I am grateful for the last difficult thing I survived. This is NOT about being thankful for pain. Never. This is about honoring your own incredible strength. Think about it. That impossible deadline you met. That painful conversation you had to have. That week you thought you would absolutely break… but you didn't.

You are sitting here, right now, on the other side of it. That struggle is now the PROOF of your resilience. You are grateful for the evidence. The evidence that you are a survivor. That you can, in fact, do very, very hard things. And you will again. And finally, number five. This one is for the future you’re about to walk into. Say it. I am grateful for a moment of peace I will create for myself today. This is so important. Gratitude isn't just a passive thing, about what you've received. It's also about what you can give—to yourself.

With this, you are promising yourself a moment. You are carving it out of the chaos before it even begins. Maybe it’s five minutes alone with a book. Maybe it’s putting on one song and just listening, without doing anything else. You are claiming a small piece of this day as YOURS. And you are thankful, right now, for the power you have to make that happen. So there they are. Five anchors. Gratitude isn't a feeling you wait for, like a bus. It's a muscle you build. It’s a tool you choose to pick up every single morning.

It doesn't erase what's hard. It doesn't fix what's broken. What it does… is it changes your focus. It reminds you that alongside everything that is difficult, there is also something that is true, and good, and strong. It’s the practice of noticing the light so you have the strength to navigate the dark. You are not pretending everything is perfect. You are just refusing to forget what is good. Go find it today. It's there. Waiting for you.
