Your brain is hardwired to hate uncertainty. It sees the unknown and immediately flags it as a potential loss. A threat. In our last episode, we talked about using real affirmations to fight the comparison trap. Today, we're using that same tool on something even bigger: the fear of what comes next. Because here’s what changed. Neuroscientists can now see what happens inside your head when you do this. When you affirm your own values, your own strength, you activate the reward centers of your brain. You literally lower your defensiveness and increase your tolerance for ambiguity.

You’re not just wishing for calm. You are actively rewiring your brain to create it. So you’re about to do something difficult. Something where the outcome is unknown. I get it. Your body is humming with that low-grade anxiety. Instead of fighting it, let’s give your brain a new story to believe. A grounded one. Take a breath. We’re going to go through five affirmations. Say them with me. Or just listen. Let them land. The first one is about acceptance. It’s the foundation. I accept that uncertainty is a natural part of life, and I am grounded in my ability to adapt and grow through it.

Say it again. This isn't about pretending you like that things are uncertain. It's about accepting it as a constant, like gravity. And then, in the same breath, reminding yourself that you are built to adapt. You have adapted to every single thing life has thrown at you so far. That is not an opinion. It is a fact. Here’s the second. This one is about trust. I trust my inner strength to face the unknown with calm and clarity, knowing that each moment unfolds as it should. When you say that—when you truly mean it—a part of your brain called the ventromedial prefrontal cortex lights up.

That’s the part involved in self-processing and reward. You are literally giving yourself a little hit of dopamine for choosing calm over panic. You are teaching your brain that calm can be your default setting. The third one is about control. And letting go. I release the need to control what I cannot, focusing instead on what I can influence with confidence and grace. So much of our anxiety comes from trying to steer a ship that's already on its course. This isn't about giving up. This is about being smart with your energy.

It’s about aiming your power where it ACTUALLY makes a difference. Your actions. Your choices. Your kindness. That’s the stuff you can control. Focus there. This next one is for when the ground really feels like it’s shaking. I am safe and capable, even when I cannot predict what comes next; my resilience grows with every challenge. Your brain has a built-in threat detector that loves to run wild. It’s an old survival instinct. By repeating this, you are building a new neural pathway. A new road in your mind. A path that says, ‘I have handled hard things before, and I can handle this now.’ Resilience isn't something you’re born with.

It’s something you build, challenge by challenge. And finally, the anchor. The one you hold onto when everything else is a storm. In the midst of uncertainty, I find clarity by grounding myself in the present moment and honoring my core values. When you don’t know what’s coming, you MUST know who you are. What do you stand for? Honesty? Courage? Compassion? Those things don’t change when the world gets chaotic. They are your compass. In any moment of doubt, you can ask: what would the most courageous version of me do right now?

What would the kindest version of me do? Your values will give you the answer. These aren't magic spells. They are tools. They are practice. Your brain doesn't fully distinguish between vivid imagination and reality. So when you say, with conviction, “I am calm and capable,” your brain starts to believe it. It starts to build the very reality you’re speaking into existence. The key is repetition. As the research says, rehearsal builds retrieval. You practice these in the quiet moments so you can access them in the loud ones.

You say them today, when you’re just starting your day, so you can find them later, when you need them most. You are not just hoping for a better way to handle this. You are actively building one. Right now.
