The part of your brain that processes fear—the amygdala—is the same part that drives courage. In episode one twenty-two, we talked about dropping the authenticity tax, about refusing to pretend. Today we apply that to courage. Because real courage isn't about pretending you're not afraid. It's about deciding that something else is more important than the fear. It's a choice, not a feeling. And you can make that choice right now. We're going to build a set of affirmations to help you do it. Five of them. Grounded. Real. Here's the first one. Say it with me. I feel the fear, and I choose the next small step anyway.
That's it. It doesn't deny the knot in your stomach. It doesn't pretend your hands aren't shaking. It acknowledges it. 'I feel the fear.' You give it a name, you let it be there. And then, you pivot. 'And I choose...' That word, CHOOSE, is everything. It puts the power back in your hands. You are not a passenger to your fear. You are the pilot. And you don't have to see the whole journey. Just the next small step. Not the leap. Not the finish line. The single, manageable movement right in front of you. That’s all courage asks for today. Second. This one is for the voice that lists your past mistakes.
My past is not a record of my failures, but a library of my resilience. Think about that. Every hard day you've ever had, you survived. Every setback, every mistake, every moment you thought you couldn't go on... you did. Those aren't scars. They are receipts. Proof of payment for the strength you now possess. Your past isn't a weapon to be used against you. It's an archive of evidence. Evidence that you are capable of weathering storms. When your mind tries to show you a highlight reel of your fumbles, you change the channel. You walk into the library of your resilience and pull a book from the shelf.
Any book. It will tell the story of how you got through. Okay, number three. This is about agency. I am the one who decides what this means and what happens next. So much of feeling stuck comes from feeling like things are happening TO you. Like you're just reacting to a script someone else wrote. This affirmation tears up that script. An unexpected challenge appears. A plan falls apart. Someone lets you down. You get to decide what it means. Is it a catastrophe? Or is it a plot twist? Is it a dead end? Or an unexpected detour to somewhere better? YOU decide the meaning.
And then, you decide what happens next. You write the next line. You are the author. Always. Fourth. This one is for the perfectionist in all of us. The one who says 'wait until you're ready.' I give myself permission to do this imperfectly. Readiness is a myth. It's a finish line that moves every time you get close. Waiting until you feel one hundred percent ready is a decision to wait forever. Courage means starting at seventy percent. It means sending the email with one typo. It means having the conversation when you don't know exactly how it will end. It means launching the project that's 'good enough' instead of waiting for 'perfect.' Because 'perfect' never ships.
Action, even messy action, creates momentum. Imperfect action is INFINITELY more powerful than perfect inaction. Give yourself that permission. Right now. And finally, the fifth one. This connects your action to your purpose. This action is bigger than my comfort. It serves what I value. Fear wants you to think small. It wants you to focus on the immediate discomfort, the risk, the awkwardness. It wants you to believe that your comfort is the most important thing in the world. This affirmation reminds you that it is not. You have values. You have a purpose. There is a reason you are even considering this difficult thing.
Connect to that. Is it for your family? Your integrity? Your future self? Your creative vision? Whatever it is, hold it in your mind. This action isn't just for you. It serves that larger purpose. And that purpose is worth more than a few moments of discomfort. It's worth more than staying safe. It's worth everything. These five statements aren't magic. They are tools. They are choices. Courage isn't a personality trait you either have or you don't. It is a practice. It is a decision you make, and then make again. The ground beneath your feet isn't certainty. It’s the choice you just made to move.
