The first thought you had this morning was about it. The thing you have to do. The conversation you have to have. The decision you need to make. And your body is already reacting. Heart rate is up. A little tightness in your chest. That's not your imagination. That's real. Your nervous system is firing exactly as designed. It's flagging a challenge. It's preparing you for a fight. And that's the first thing to get right today. You don't have to pretend that feeling isn't there. Most people try to fight it. To tell themselves, “don’t be anxious.” Good luck with that. That's like telling the ocean, “don't have waves.” The feeling is a signal.
It means the thing you're about to do matters. It has stakes. So today, you're not going to waste energy fighting the feeling. You're going to acknowledge it. You’re going to look right at it and say, “I see you. Thanks for the information.” And then you're going to pick it up and carry it with you. It doesn't get to drive. It doesn't get a vote on where you go. But it can come along for the ride. You have survived every single one of your worst days so far. That is not a belief. That is a statistic. And it is one hundred percent. The feeling is just a feeling. Your track record is a fact.
The second thing. You're probably replaying something from yesterday. Or last week. A mistake you made. An opportunity you missed. An awkward word you said. Let it go. Not because it wasn't a mistake... maybe it was. Who cares. You are not a time traveler. The machine that can take you back to last Tuesday and fix that conversation does not exist. Wasting your energy this morning wishing it did is the single best way to ruin today, too. The only part of your life you can steer is the part that's right in front of you. The next ten seconds. The next breath. The next step out of this room.
Your power isn't in rewriting history. It's in writing the next sentence. And the pen is in your hand, right now. You get to choose the next word. That's it. And that is everything. And that leads to the last thing. And it's the most important. You're waiting to feel ready. You're waiting for a sign. For the fear to go away. For the perfect moment of confidence to descend from the heavens and fill you with heroic certainty. It's not coming. It was never coming. “Ready” is a myth. It’s a story we tell ourselves to justify staying still. It's the finish line we imagine we have to cross before we can even start the race.
But the world doesn't work that way. You don't get ready and then do the thing. You get ready by doing the thing. You do it scared. You do it messy. You do it when you're twenty percent sure and eighty percent terrified. Courage was never the absence of fear. Courage is the judgment that something else is more important than fear. You already know what that something else is. You knew it the second you woke up this morning. The question was never what. It was never even when. The question is what you do in the next five minutes. Go answer it.
