You have a perfect record. One hundred percent. You have survived every single one of your worst days. That’s not an opinion. That’s data. Every catastrophe, every misstep, every moment you were certain the world was ending… you’re still here. That track record isn’t an accident. It’s not luck. It is a skill you have been honing your entire life without ever giving yourself credit for it. Today feels like another one of those days, doesn’t it? The air is a little thinner. The thing you have to do feels a little too big.
Good. Let’s not pretend it doesn’t. But let’s also not pretend you’re coming into this empty-handed. You’re not. You’re coming in with a perfect record. So let’s start there. With the first lie your fear is going to tell you this morning. It’s going to whisper that you are an imposter. That you don’t belong here. That you are out of your depth and everyone is about to find out. It’s a compelling story. It feels true. But it’s based on a false premise. The premise is that you are supposed to already know how to do this thing.
That you’re supposed to be a natural. I want you to remember something specific. Go back. Remember learning to do something you are now good at. Anything. Driving a car. A piece of software for work. A new language. A sport. Go all the way back to day one. Remember the feeling? The total, overwhelming confusion. The frustration. The feeling that your hands and your brain were not connected. Remember thinking, “I will never get this.” Remember the sheer awkwardness of it all. The mistakes.
The do-overs. The wanting to just quit because it felt so impossibly hard. Now… feel where you are today with that skill. The ease. The way you don’t even have to think about it. It just flows. How did you cross that chasm? From “I can’t” to “of course I can”? It wasn’t magic. It was work. It was repetition. It was humility. It was staying with the discomfort. It was being willing to look stupid for a while. You did that. You have done that, over and over again, your entire life.
This difficult thing you are facing today… it is no different. The feeling of being an imposter, of not knowing how… that’s not a sign that you’re going to fail. That’s the starting pistol. It’s the feeling you ALWAYS get at the beginning of learning something hard. You’ve mistaken the starting line for a stop sign. It’s not. You are not an imposter. You are a practiced, expert learner. You have proven, time and again, that you can start from zero and get to one hundred. You know how to do this.
Not the task itself, maybe. But the process of mastery. And the process is the only part that matters. The second lie your fear will tell you is that you are too fragile for this. That you’re going to break. It will point to all your past failures, your heartbreaks, your deepest wounds, and it will say, “See? You get hurt. You’re breakable. Don’t risk it again.” And it will show you a highlight reel of every time you got knocked down. That job you didn’t get. That relationship that ended.
That project that fell apart. That time you let someone down, or someone let you down. And you’ll feel that old sting. That shame. That ache. I want you to look at those memories differently today. Right now. Pick one. A real one. A failure that still has a little heat on it. Don’t just glance at it. Go into it. Feel the weight of it. Acknowledge the pain of it. It was real. It hurt. Now. Where are you? You are here. You are not IN that memory. You are on the other side of it. The story didn’t end there.
You kept going. You healed. Maybe not perfectly, maybe not completely, but you healed enough to get to today. That failure, that wound, that scar… it is not evidence of your weakness. It is a receipt. It is proof of purchase for a lesson you had to learn the hard way. It is the record of a debt that you paid. And you survived the payment. Your scars are not vulnerabilities. They are proof of your resilience. They are the healed-over places that are stronger than the original skin.
When you look at your past, don’t see a museum of your failures. See an armory. See a collection of tools and experiences that you earned. You earned them in the fire. That pain you went through doesn’t disqualify you from facing what’s next. It is the very thing that qualifies you. It proves, beyond any doubt, that you can get hit. You can fall. You can break. And you can get back up. You are not fragile. You are durable. You’ve got the receipts to prove it. And the third lie… this one is the most subtle, and maybe the most dangerous.
It’s the lie that you are alone in this. That it’s all on you. That no one understands. That you have to carry this weight all by yourself, and if you stumble, you will fall alone. This story is isolating. It builds walls. And it makes any burden feel a thousand times heavier. So let’s tear that one down, too. With evidence. I want you to think of a time someone showed up for you. And I mean in a small way. Not a grand, cinematic rescue. A small act of grace. The friend who sent a text that just said “thinking of you” on a hard day.
The coworker who brought you a coffee without you asking. The stranger who held a door when your hands were full. The person who just listened, for five minutes, without trying to solve anything. Just find one. A small, simple moment of connection. Feel the warmth of it. That wasn’t an accident. That was a current of support flowing toward you. Now, flip it. Remember a time you did that for someone else. You sent the text. You brought the coffee. You listened. Remember how it felt to be useful.
To offer a moment of ease to someone else in their struggle. You didn’t do it because you expected a reward. You did it because you are connected. Because on some deep, instinctual level, you know we’re all in this together. That current flows through you, and out of you, into the world. You are a node in a vast network of care. You have given it, and you have received it. That network doesn’t just disappear on hard days. It’s still there. Right now. The people you love, the people who believe in you… they are a resource.
Their belief is not some vague, nice idea. It is a form of energy. You can draw on it. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness. It’s an act of intelligence. It’s acknowledging the reality of the network. You are not an island. You are a harbor. You have given shelter, and you can take shelter. You are not alone. You have never been alone. So here you are. This morning. At the edge of this difficult thing. And the old stories are playing. The fear is loud. But we have new stories now, don’t we?
And ours are based on facts. Fact one: You are not an imposter. You are a world-class learner who has a lifetime of experience turning “I don’t know how” into “I’ve got this.” Fact two: You are not fragile. You are battle-tested. Your scars are a testament to what you have already survived. They are proof of your strength. Fact three: You are not alone. You are a critical part of a network of care, and you can draw strength from it just as you have given strength to it. This is the truth.
The evidence is all there. In your memory. In your body. In the world around you. The question was never ‘can you?’. You’ve answered that one a thousand times over. The only question left is ‘will you?’. Today, the answer is yes. Go prove it to yourself. Again.
