Wherever you are right now... just arrive. Feel the support beneath you... the air on your skin. Take one slow breath in... and let it go. Neuroscientists have found that just ten minutes of quiet, waking rest can significantly improve how our brains learn and remember things. In our last pause together, we spoke about the quiet power of becoming one percent better. But the secret is that the becoming doesn't happen in the moment of effort. It happens in the quiet that follows.
We hear the word 'rest' and we immediately think of sleep. But this is something different. This is the space between the notes. The pause at the end of a sentence. It’s staring out the window without an agenda. It’s sitting in your car for a moment after you’ve parked, just listening to the engine quiet down. And for most of us, this kind of stillness feels... uncomfortable. Almost wasteful. The world is constantly telling us that every empty moment is a missed opportunity.
A chance to check one more email, scroll one more feed, plan one more thing. We carry this guilt around, this feeling that if we are not actively producing, we are failing. Here's what that means if you're feeling run down, or stretched thin. That guilt is a fabrication. That feeling of needing to be 'on' all the time is not a measure of your worth. It's a symptom of a world that has forgotten how to simply be. Allowing yourself a moment of true, unproductive rest is not a weakness.
It is a quiet, radical act of self-preservation. We have the whole equation backwards. We think we need to earn our rest. That it's a reward we get after we've poured everything out. But what if that's not it at all? What if rest isn't about recovering from our lives, but is the very foundation from which we live our lives? The source of our patience, our creativity, our compassion. It’s not about refilling an empty tank. It’s about tending to the soil so that anything can grow in the first place.
It’s not about recovering from what you’ve done. It’s about creating the capacity for what you have yet to BECOME. So I invite you to try this. The next time you find yourself with a few minutes of unplanned time... between meetings, waiting in a line, before everyone else wakes up... resist the urge to fill it. Don't reach for your phone. Don't try to optimize it. Just be in it. Notice your breath again. Feel the stillness. It might feel strange at first. But this is the practice.
This is where you find the quiet strength you’ve been looking for. This is not an escape from your life. It is a deeper engagement with it. Stillness is not empty space. It is the gift of coming home to yourself.
