Find a place where you can be for a few moments. Seated, or standing, or lying down. It doesn't matter. Just arrive right here. Notice the gentle weight of your body... the air on your skin. And let's begin with a breath. A slow inhale... and a long, soft exhale. Good. Christopher Columbus planned his 1492 voyage using a map that dramatically underestimated the size of the Earth. His entire plan, every calculation, was built on a fundamental, massive error. In our last conversation, we talked about finding the 'cracks of gold' in our own imperfections, and this feels so connected to that...

this human need to draw a perfect map for a world we can't possibly know completely. We want the route plotted out, every island and every current accounted for. We do it every morning, don't we? We wake up and we start drawing the map for the day. The to-do list is our compass. The calendar is our chart. We plot the course... the meetings, the errands, the conversations we need to have. We try to account for everything, to build a day that is efficient, productive, predictable. We want to sail a smooth sea. And there’s nothing wrong with that desire.

It’s a very human thing to want a sense of control, a sense of knowing what’s next. It can feel safe. But what happens when the wind shifts? When an unexpected current pulls you off course? A phone call you didn't plan for. A sudden wave of sadness, or joy. A conversation that goes somewhere you never, ever expected. Here's what that means if you're the one holding the map. Your first instinct might be to panic. To feel like the day is ruined, that the plan has failed. You might clench your jaw, your shoulders might tighten up to your ears. You can probably feel that tension right now, just thinking about it.

That feeling of gripping, of trying to force the ship back onto the line you drew. But what if... what if the plan was never the point? What if the map was just... a suggestion? A starting point. A way to get the sails up. The real skill, the real strength, isn't in drawing a perfect map. It's in learning how to navigate. It's in trusting that you have what it takes to handle the weather as it comes. That you can read the stars when the compass breaks. That you can find your way even when you are, for a moment, completely and totally lost. The need for a perfect plan isn't really about the day.

It’s about a fear that we won't be enough for the unexpected. But you are. You ARE enough. You have survived every unexpected storm that has ever come your way. You are here, right now, breathing. That is the proof. So I wonder what it would feel like to loosen your grip on the map, just for today. To hold the plan for the day lightly, in an open hand instead of a clenched fist. Feel that in your body. Imagine uncurling your fingers. Imagine the feeling of release in your forearm, your shoulder, your jaw. The day is not a checklist to be conquered.

It's a landscape to be explored. There are hidden coves and unexpected vistas that no map could ever show you. There is beauty in the detours. There is grace in getting a little lost. The most beautiful parts of your story are the ones you didn't plan to write.
