A single sheet of paper weighs about four and a half grams. In our last time together, we spoke about carrying quiet forward from a moment of stillness. I’ve been thinking a lot this week about the other things we carry… the things that are not so quiet, and how they accumulate, sheet by sheet. So let’s begin right here. Wherever you are. Just allowing your body to settle. Noticing the gentle rhythm of your own breath, in… and out. Feeling the points of contact between your body and the world… the chair beneath you, the floor under your feet.
You are here. You are safe. Now, bring to mind that single sheet of paper. Almost weightless. This is one small expectation. Maybe it’s the thought that you ‘should’ be more productive today. Or that you ‘must’ make everyone happy. On its own, it’s nothing. You can hold it without even noticing. But they are rarely on their own, are they? Another sheet is added. An expectation from your childhood. Another, from a job. Another, from something you saw online. Sheets become a stack. A ream. A heavy box you didn't even realize you were carrying.
And we wonder why our shoulders ache. We wonder why our breath feels shallow. Here's what that means if you're feeling that weight right now. It means you haven't failed. It means you are not weak. It just means you have been collecting things for a very, very long time. And no one ever showed you that it was okay to set them down. So how do we do that? How do we loosen the grip? Here is the gentle part. You don’t have to pry your fingers open. You don’t have to fight the weight. The first step is simply to NOTICE it.
Can you, just for a moment, feel one of those ‘shoulds’? Don’t argue with it. Don’t judge it. Just acknowledge it. Ah. There you are. I feel you. It might feel like a tightness in your chest. A knot in your stomach. A thought that just circles and circles. See if you can picture it. Not as a rule written in stone, but maybe as just… an object. A smooth, heavy stone you’ve been clenching in your fist. Feel its weight. Its texture. Its coldness. You’ve held it for so long, you forgot you were the one holding it.
And now… what would it feel like to simply… open your hand? Not to throw the stone. Not to smash it. But just to unfurl your fingers and let it rest in your open palm. And then, perhaps, to gently place it on the ground beside you. It’s still there. But it is no longer YOURS to carry. That is the release. It’s not a grand, dramatic act. It’s a quiet, personal permission slip. The permission to not need a specific outcome. The permission for things to be exactly as they are, just for this breath.
When we let go of how we think things should be, we create a space. And that space is not empty. It’s filled with what IS. The quiet hum of the room. The warmth of your own body. The simple, uncomplicated peace of being present. That’s where the real joy finds room to grow. As we bring this time to a close, just return to your breath. One more easy inhale… and a slow, complete exhale. The most beautiful things in your life won’t grow from your plans, but in the spaces you bravely leave open.
