So wherever you are right now... just notice your breath. No need to change it. Just feel the quiet rise and fall. The air coming in... and going out. Feel the weight of your body... in the chair, on the floor. The points of contact. The gentle pull of gravity, holding you here. Let your shoulders soften. Let the space between your eyebrows release. This moment is here for you. A 2010 study found that self-compassion is a far more powerful predictor of coping with failure than self-esteem.
In our last meditation, we spoke about finding that feeling of enough... that quiet warmth in the moment. It turns out that warmth... that feeling of being enough, right now... has a name. It’s self-compassion. And it’s not what we think it is. We spend so much of our lives building walls. Putting on armor. We learn early to present a version of ourselves that is capable... strong... unbreakable. And we get so good at it. The performance becomes second nature.
But that armor is heavy. Isn't it? It takes a constant, low-level effort to keep it polished, to keep the dents hidden. A tension in the jaw. A tightness across the shoulders. A breath held just a little too long. Here’s what that means if you’re the one who always has to have it together... It means you are carrying a weight you were never meant to carry alone. It means the strength you’re so proud of is also exhausting you. And here is the quiet, radical truth...
What if true strength isn’t hardness? What if it isn’t being impenetrable? What if our real power lies in the places we are soft? Think of an old oak tree in a storm. It doesn’t stand rigid. It BENDS. It sways. Its flexibility is what keeps it from snapping in the wind. A stone monument, by contrast, seems so strong. So permanent. But under enough pressure... it just cracks. It shatters. We’ve been taught to be the monument. What if... we were meant to be the tree?
Resilience isn't about being unbreakable. It’s not about avoiding the cracks. True resilience is about having the GRACE to mend. It’s the courage to feel the hurt... to acknowledge the break... and to allow the quiet, slow, miraculous work of healing to begin. And that requires softness. It requires vulnerability. It requires letting the light in through the very cracks we’ve been trying so desperately to hide. So just for this next breath... Can you find one place you’re holding on tight...
and just... soften it? Maybe it’s your hands. Let them rest, open. Maybe it’s your stomach. Let it be soft. There is nothing to defend against in this moment. You are safe here. You are whole. Your softness is not a weakness. It is your home.
