Wherever you are right now... just arrive. Feel the points of contact between your body and the world. The weight of you in the chair... the soles of your feet on the floor. Notice the air. Is it cool? Is it still? Take one slow breath in... and let it go. Your brain receives around eleven million bits of information every single second. Of that, you are consciously aware of about... FIFTY. In our last pause together, we spoke about the deep peace of being exactly where you need to be.

But what if our own minds, in an effort to protect us, are designed to slowly erase the very place we’re in? It’s a process called habituation. It’s a survival tool, really. Your brain learns to filter out what’s constant... what’s familiar... so it can save its precious attention for what’s new, or what might be a threat. The hum of the refrigerator. The feeling of your favorite sweater against your skin. The particular slant of light that comes through your window at this time of day.

At first, they're noticed. Then, they become familiar. And then... they become invisible. Background noise. The brain files them away as "known," "safe," "unimportant." So what does this mean for you, right now, in this quiet moment? It means you have a CHOICE. You can consciously, gently, override the autopilot. Let’s try it. If you're holding a warm drink... don't just feel the warmth. Feel where the heat is most intense in your palm. Notice the specific curve of the handle under your fingers.

The weight of it. Your brain has filed this away as "cup." But you can un-file it. You can experience it for the first time, again. Listen. Not to everything, just to one thing. Maybe there’s birdsong. Don't just hear "birds." Can you pick out a single call? Can you follow it from beginning to end? Hear the space right after it stops. That one, single sound was there the whole time. But now, you are there for IT. This is the practice. It's not about finding new, more exciting things to fill our lives with.

It's about rediscovering the quiet magic in the things that have been here all along. These small sensations are not interruptions from your day. They are the very substance of your day. They are the threads that make up the fabric of your life. The extraordinary is just the ordinary, noticed.
