The human brain receives around eleven million bits of information every single second. Of all that sensory data, we are consciously aware of maybe… fifty. It’s a survival mechanism, this filtering. We have to ignore most of the world just to function. But I wonder what we’re choosing to ignore. So for just a moment, let’s choose what to notice. Wherever you are, just arrive. You’re already here, of course. But let your attention arrive, too. Feel the points of contact your body is making with the world.

The weight of you in a chair. The soles of your feet on the floor. Take one breath. Not a special, deep, meditative breath. Just the next breath that’s coming anyway. Feel the air come in… and feel it go out. That’s it. You’re here. You’re breathing. It’s enough. We’ve all become experts at filtering for problems. For threats. For the next thing on the to-do list. It’s what our brain is built for. But that filter can get stuck. We can forget how to turn it off… or how to point it at something else.

So for the next two minutes, let’s just point it at something else. We’re going to look for three simple, good things. Things that are already here, hidden in the static. Let’s find the first one. Let it be something physical. A feeling. Maybe it’s the warmth of the mug in your hands. Not just "hot," but the specific way the heat seeps into your palms. Or maybe it’s the texture of your sleeve against your skin. The softness of it. Find one simple, physical sensation that is, in its own small way, pleasant.

And just… hold it in your attention for a second. Now for the second. Let this one be a sound. Our ears are designed to listen for danger, for alarms, for our own name. But what else is there? Can you hear a bird outside? The gentle hum of a machine doing its work? The almost-silent sound of the air moving in the room? Isolate one sound. Don’t label it, just… hear it. Let it be what it is. And now a third thing. Let this one be something you can see. The way the light is falling on a surface.

The specific shade of green on a plant. The quiet shape of a shadow in the corner of the room. Something that has been in your field of vision all this time, but that you haven’t truly seen. Look at it now. Just for a moment. They were there the whole time. The warmth. The sound. The light. They were always present in the eleven million bits. We just weren’t filtering for them. This practice… this noticing… it doesn’t erase the difficult parts of the day.

It doesn’t solve the problems. That’s not its job. Its job is to remind you that the world is wider, and softer, and more detailed than your problems. It reminds you that even on the hardest days, there is a texture, a sound, a patch of light that is true, and quiet, and good. The practice isn't about finding something extraordinary. It's about realizing the ordinary was extraordinary all along.
