For every one mile of visible highway in a city, there are often up to ten miles of pipes, cables, and tunnels running completely unseen beneath your feet. In our last episode, we spoke about Kintsugi, the Japanese art of mending cracks with gold, finding strength in the breaks. And I’ve been thinking all week about the unseen work that goes into that mending... the quiet effort that happens long before the gold ever appears. So just for a moment... wherever you are... I invite you to find your breath. You don’t have to change it.
Just notice it. Notice the way your body is being supported... by a chair, by the floor. Feel the solid ground beneath you. Let’s talk about that unseen work. Not the big projects. Not the deadlines or the promotions. I’m talking about the quiet, invisible labor of being a person. The effort it takes to get out of bed on a day when the sky feels heavy. The conscious decision to not say the sharp thing that’s right on the tip of your tongue. The energy it takes to hold a boundary you just learned how to set. That work has no audience.
There are no performance reviews for choosing kindness to yourself in your own head. There’s no bonus for processing a feeling instead of burying it. It’s the deep, subterranean work... the laying of pipes and cables for your own soul. And it is EXHAUSTING. And here’s what that means if you’re you... sitting here, listening to this. It means that the work you do that no one claps for... the work you might not even recognize as work... is the most important work you will ever do. We have this tendency, don’t we? To measure our lives by what’s visible.
The finished product. The clean house. The successful launch. The happy photograph. We look at the shiny surface and we mistake it for the whole structure. But that’s like judging a redwood by its topmost branch, forgetting the hundreds of feet of trunk and the acres of roots that hold it steady in a storm. The real work... the foundational work... is almost always invisible. It’s the thousand tiny choices you make every day. The choice to drink a glass of water. The choice to stretch for thirty seconds. The choice to catch a negative thought and just...
let it pass by without getting on its train. Each one is a quiet act of construction. A single brick being laid in the foundation of the person you are becoming. Here’s the turn. That quiet effort is not the runway to the main event. It is the MAIN EVENT. It’s not the prelude to your life. It IS your life. That internal effort, that quiet tending... that is the engine of your growth. It’s the root system. Everything you see and everything everyone else sees is just the flower that blooms because of it. So when you feel like you’re not doing enough...
when you look at your life and you can’t see the progress you hoped for... I want you to remember the ten miles of pipes for every one mile of road. Come back to your breath. Feel the air in your lungs. The quiet, steady work your body is doing, right now, without you even asking. It sees you. It knows. Your quiet efforts are building something beautiful, even when you can't see it yet.
