Go ahead and find a comfortable position. Wherever you are right now. Noticing the weight of your body... the points of contact with the chair, or the floor. Just letting yourself arrive. Take one slow breath in. And let it go. Every single moment, your senses are taking in over eleven million bits of data. But your conscious mind... the part of you listening to my voice right now... it only attends to about FIFTY. Fifty bits. Out of eleven million. In our last episode, we talked about setting down the invisible load of always needing to be better.
This is a different kind of filter. Before you even have a thought, a network in your brain has already decided what to show you... and what to leave out. It’s called the Reticular Activating System. The RAS. And along with the thalamus, it acts as a gatekeeper. Its job is to protect you from sensory overload. It prioritizes what it thinks is important for your survival, based on your past experiences and your immediate needs. And here's what that means if you're just... a person trying to get through the day. It means your mind isn't an open window.
It's a heavily curated feed. It shows you the urgent email, the unexpected bill, the problem that needs solving. And it filters out... well, almost everything else. It filters out the way the afternoon light is falling across the floor. The intricate pattern in the wood grain of your desk. The quiet, steady rhythm of your own breathing. We walk through our days in a world of incredible detail, and our own brain conspires to keep most of it from us. Not out of malice... but out of habit. Out of a deep, ancient need to survive.
But we are not only here to survive. So what can we do? How do we see past the gatekeeper? The practice is simply... intention. A quiet decision to notice. It’s what some call "beginner's mind." To choose to see something familiar as if it’s the very first time. Here's what that means for you, right now, in this room. Let your eyes land on something you wouldn’t normally notice. Maybe a crack in the ceiling. A dust mote dancing in a sunbeam. The way a shadow falls. Don’t try to analyze it. Don't name it. Just... receive it.
See it for the shape it is. The color it is. The spiritual naturalist Leigh Allen said that awe isn't found in grand miracles. It’s found in “the intricate patterns of nature, the quiet moments of reflection, and the vibrant web of existence that surrounds us every day.” The secret is that the web is ALWAYS there. The wonder is not something you have to create. It’s something you simply have to allow. It’s a choice to let in just one more bit of information. One more piece of the world that was already waiting for you.
This is the work. Not striving. Not achieving. But just... noticing. Letting the world in. It can change the texture of a difficult day. It can ground you when you feel adrift. It can remind you that even in the most ordinary of moments, something extraordinary is happening. You are here. And the world is here with you. The world is always offering its beauty. Our only work is to receive it.
