Go ahead and find your seat. Or your place on the floor. Wherever you are. Just let the weight of your body settle. Feel the ground, or the chair, holding you. Take one breath in. And let it go. A caterpillar, inside its chrysalis, digests itself. It dissolves into a soupy liquid before it ever becomes a butterfly. Last time, we talked about finding beauty in the day’s fractures… but what happens when you feel like you’re not just fractured, but completely dissolved?
There’s a point in every important journey… every project, every new chapter of a life… that feels like this. It’s the messy middle. It’s when the initial excitement has faded, but the end is nowhere in sight. The old way of being is gone, but the new one hasn’t taken shape yet. And all you are is… potential. And questions. And a whole lot of doubt. This is the point where we think we’ve made a terrible mistake. The half-finished painting looks like a mess.
The new business isn’t making any money. The move to a new city just feels… lonely. The narrative we tell ourselves is that we’re failing. That we’re stuck. That we should have never started. Here’s what that means if you’re staring at that half-written novel, or halfway through a training program that feels impossible. It means the process is working exactly as it should. That feeling of being lost, of being formless… that isn't a sign that you’re off the path.
That is the path. The discomfort is the evidence of transformation. You can’t build something new from something that is already finished and solid. You have to allow for the breakdown. You have to become the soup. The whole point isn’t to rush through the middle as fast as you can, gritting your teeth until you get to the other side. The invitation… the real work… is to learn how to be in the middle. To find the quiet strength in the uncertainty.
Because that soupy, undefined, messy place is the only place where true creation happens. It’s where all the magic is. It’s where you are remade. Everything else is just prologue and epilogue. The story is happening right now. So how do we do that? How do we find peace when nothing feels solid? You let go of the need to see the finish line. And you find one small, real thing to anchor you in the here and now. Just for today.
Maybe it’s the feeling of your feet on the ground as you walk. The taste of your morning coffee. The sound of one piece of music. You find your footing not by looking for the distant shore, but by feeling the support of the water you’re in right now. So let’s take one more breath together. In through the nose. And out through the mouth. Here is the thought to carry with you. A quiet reminder for the messy middle. You are not falling apart.
You are becoming.
