Emotional tears contain stress hormones that the body pushes out as a form of release. Last time, we spoke about finding the warmth in your unrepeatable existence. What if some of that warmth is found not by adding something new, but by letting something old... go? So wherever you are right now, just arrive. Feel the points of contact between your body and the world. The chair beneath you. The floor under your feet. The air on your skin.
Take a breath. Not a special one. Not a deep one, unless that’s what your body wants. Just… the next one. And on the exhale, bring your awareness to your shoulders. Are they living up by your ears? Can you invite them, just gently, to drop a half-inch? Bring your awareness to your jaw. Is it tight? Can you create a little space between your top and bottom teeth? And your hands. Are they clenched? Resting in your lap, or on a table… can you let your fingers unfurl?
We hold so much in these places. We are professional holders. We hold conversations that ended days ago. We hold expectations for moments that haven't happened yet. We hold the deep, quiet ache of wanting something, or someone, to have been different. And the holding takes work. It's a constant, low-grade muscular effort. A constant, low-grade hum of psychic energy. A quiet, cellular clenching. It is the work of resisting gravity.
The work of pretending we can control the uncontrollable. It is exhausting. And here is the gentle, surprising truth. You held on for a reason. That grip… it probably kept you safe at some point. It served a purpose. It was the best you could do at the time, and it got you here. So this isn't about judging the fist you made. This is about honoring the incredible effort it took to keep it clenched for so long. It’s about looking at your own tired hands with a little bit of awe, and a whole lot of compassion.
Thanking them for the work. And then asking, so, so softly… Is it still needed? Is this weight still yours to carry? Just for this moment, let’s try. Picture one of those things. That worry. That memory. That tension. Imagine it resting in the palm of your open hand. Feel its weight, its temperature. You don't have to throw it. You don't have to destroy it. You just have to stop holding it. Open your fingers. Let it go. Let it fall.
Let it dissolve. Feel that? The sudden absence of weight. The coolness where there was pressure. That isn't emptiness. That is space. The space you just made is not empty. It is simply, finally, you.
