Let’s begin, right here. Wherever here is for you. Finding a comfortable posture… maybe seated, maybe lying down. Just take a moment to notice the points of contact. Your feet on the floor. The weight of your body in the chair or on the bed. Letting the day, so far, fall away. And just take one breath. A full breath in… and a slow breath out. Dr. Brené Brown's first TED talk, the one on vulnerability, has been viewed more than sixty million times.
Last week, we spoke about finding strength in stillness, and it seems that quiet strength is exactly what's required for the courage that so many of us are apparently searching for. Sixty million views. For a conversation about the one thing we are taught, from our first scraped knee, to hide at all costs. Our uncertainty. Our fear. Our imperfect, messy, beautifully human selves. We spend so much of our lives building armor. Piece by piece.
The perfect job title. The right answer in a meeting. The carefully curated photos. The smile that says ‘I’m fine’ when we are anything but. We learn to perform, to protect, to project an image of someone who has it all figured out. And that armor… is heavy. Isn’t it? The sheer effort of holding it all together. Of managing the performance. Of making sure no one sees the cracks. It’s exhausting. And it’s lonely. Because inside that fortress, we’re all alone.
This journey of finding a gentle perspective often leads us to these uncomfortable, powerful truths. And here's the one that sits at the very center of this conversation: Vulnerability is not weakness. It is the clearest measure of our courage. It’s not about broadcasting your secrets to the world. It’s not about emotional dumping on an unsuspecting friend. It’s the quiet, brave, terrifying act of letting someone you trust see you. Really see you.
It's the shaky voice that says, "I don't know the answer." Or, "I need help." Or, "You hurt me." It’s the courage to say "I love you" first, with no guarantee it will be said back. It's the willingness to show up and be seen when you have absolutely no control over the outcome. That is not weakness. That is a brave act of self-acceptance. So what does this mean for you, tonight? In your life? It means that the deep, authentic connection you might be longing for… the feeling of truly belonging, of being known… it lives on the other side of that risk.
It means your authenticity isn't a liability; it's an invitation. An invitation for the people who matter to meet you where you are, and for you to meet them. It's not a one-time grand gesture. It's a practice. A thousand small moments. The choice to put down the armor, just for a breath, and let your real self be seen. So as we close, let's come back to the quiet of this moment. One more breath, in. And out. And as you move back into your evening, or into sleep… carry this one thought with you.
The bravest thing you can do… is let yourself be seen.
