the sun rose this morning at its appointed time and it will set again this evening in our last time together we talked about finding a firm footing in what we called expectant trust it's a beautiful idea but it can feel abstract today we're going to look at a single powerful instruction for what that trust looks like in practice moment by moment let's listen to this quiet word from the book of matthew chapter six verse 34 therefore do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself each day has enough trouble of its own that first word therefore is a hinge it connects this command to a whole picture jesus has just painted a picture

of a god who meticulously cares for the smallest things like lilies in a field and birds in the sky so because that is true he says do not worry this isn't a gentle suggestion it's a clear direct instruction think of it as a boundary line drawn in the sand of your mind here's what that means for you right now as you look at your calendar it means the anxieties of next week's presentation do not get to have a voice at your breakfast table this morning the difficult family conversation you anticipate for the weekend does not get to steal the piece of your tuesday worrying about tomorrow is an attempt to exert control over something we simply can't touch it's like trying to pay a bill that isn't due yet with an income you haven't received it's a recipe for spiritual and emotional overdraft then comes the reason which is so deeply practical for tomorrow we'll worry about itself there's a profound recognition here of how life is structured the challenges of tomorrow are calibrated for

the person you will be tomorrow you will be a day older a day wiser and equipped with a fresh set of resources for that specific day serious god's economy is a daily one this is a principle woven throughout scripture manna was given in the wilderness one day at a time trying to hoard it for the next day only resulted in rot in the same way he gives us daily bread daily strength daily grace he has given you everything you need to navigate the next twenty four hours he has not given you the grace you'll need for friday why because it's not friday when friday arrives the specific grace required for friday's challenges will be there

waiting for you trying to solve friday's problems with tuesday's grace is an exercise in futility it will always leave you feeling exhausted and defeated because you're working with resources you were never meant to have yet and that brings us to the final phrase each day has enough trouble of its own this isn't a pessimistic statement it's a realistic one it's a call to focus your attention your energy your emotional capacity these are finite precious resources this verse is giving you divine permission to steward them wisely your job is not to solve every hypothetical problem that might ever happen your job is to faithfully and courageously handle what is actually

in your hands right now so the real pivot here is from worry to trust the verse is built on an unspoken premise that a loving god is in control of tomorrow you don't have to be the core question this verse gently places before you this morning is this do you trust that the god who gives you strength for today will also give your future self strength for the future worry doesn't empty tomorrow of its sorrows it only empties today of its strength so here is the invitation for this morning look at your day just this one identify the trouble it holds the single email you need to write the one phone call you need to

make the task that requires your focus the person who needs your undivided attention pour your energy into that engage with the reality of today not the anxiety of a future that hasn't arrived and may never arrive in the way you fear leave tomorrow's burdens for the person you will be tomorrow that person will have fresh strength and new mercies your only assignment is to live this day with the grace you've been given for this day just this one
