Good morning. Let's take a quiet moment together. Yesterday, we spoke about finding the strength and courage to face whatever the day holds. Today, we're going to lean into a different kind of strength. It's the strength that comes from a place of deep, settled peace. It's found in one of the most beloved promises in all of Scripture. Here is the reading from Psalm 23, verse 1. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. That’s it. Just ten words. But inside them is a universe of peace, if we're willing to receive it.
Let's sit with them for a moment. The first part is a declaration of relationship. "The LORD is my shepherd." It doesn’t say the Lord is like a shepherd. It says He IS one. And not just a shepherd in general, but my shepherd. It’s personal. This is something a lot of people find confusing at first. They think it means we are supposed to be thoughtless, just blindly following. But that's missing a beautiful piece of the picture. To have a shepherd means you are personally cared for. It means someone with a wider view, who knows the landscape, is watching over your path.
A shepherd knows where the dangers are hidden. A shepherd knows the way to green pastures and quiet waters, the places of rest and nourishment. So here's what that means for you today. It means you are not navigating the hours ahead on your own. You are not responsible for knowing every threat, or for finding your own sustenance from scratch. Your job is to trust the Shepherd. To listen for His voice. To stay near to Him. It's a willing surrender, a choice to be led by someone who loves you perfectly and knows the way home.
It means that in the middle of a meeting, or in a difficult conversation, or just sitting in traffic… you are being guided. You are being protected. Then comes the second part of the verse. It's the direct result of the first. Because the Lord is your shepherd… "I shall not want." This might be one of the most counter-cultural statements a person can make. Our world is built on want. It's an entire engine of creating desire for things we don't have. It wants you to feel that you are lacking. That you need more.
A better job, a different house, a newer phone, a more exciting life. The feeling of "not enough" is the air we breathe. But this verse invites us into a different reality. "I shall not want" is a declaration of contentment. It’s a statement of fact, rooted in the character of the Shepherd. It means that because He is providing, you lack nothing that is essential. This isn't a promise that you'll get everything your heart desires. It's a promise that you will have everything your soul needs. There's a profound difference.
It's the peace of knowing that your deepest needs—for love, for meaning, for security, for hope—are fully met in Him. It re-calibrates your heart. It teaches you to find your satisfaction not in what you can acquire, but in who you are with. The Shepherd's presence IS the provision. So as you move into this day, hold these ten words close. Let them be your anchor when the winds of anxiety or comparison begin to blow. When you feel lost, you can whisper… The LORD is my shepherd. When you feel the pull of discontent, the fear that you are not enough or do not have enough, you can declare… I shall not want.
This isn't just a hopeful wish. It's the truth of your reality today. You are deeply cared for. You are personally guided. And in the presence of your Shepherd, you have EVERYTHING you need. Go in that peace.
