The average person has about seventy thousand thoughts in a single day. That's almost one thought for every second you are awake. In our last episode, Morning Roots, we talked about finding a peaceful way to ground your morning. Today's verse is an anchor for those seventy thousand thoughts, especially the ones that bring fear with them. Let's read from the book of Isaiah, chapter forty-one, verse ten. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. This is one of the most powerful promises in all of scripture. And it’s not a simple platitude. It's a command, followed by a reason, followed by a series of actions. Let's start with the command. "So do not fear." This can feel impossible. When you get the bad news, or the bill you can't pay, or the worry about your family that keeps you up at night... fear is a natural response.
But notice God doesn't just say "stop being afraid" and walk away. He immediately gives the reason. "For I am with you." Here's what that means for you, right now, in this moment. The instruction isn't to pretend the scary thing isn't real. It’s to remember that something else is more real. God’s presence. The fear is a feeling, but the presence is a fact. The verse is inviting you to shift your focus from the size of your fear to the reality of your companion.
You are not alone in this. That is the foundational truth. Then, the verse shifts from a state of being—"I am with you"—to direct action. Look at these verbs. "I will strengthen you... and help you... I will uphold you." These are not passive wishes. They are active, specific promises. They are what God is doing, and will do, for you. Here's what that means if you feel weak today. You are not being asked to muster up courage out of thin air. You are being invited to receive it.
Strength, in this verse, isn't something you build. It's something you are given. Help isn't a sign of failure; it's the sign of a relationship. You are not a solo operator who has to figure it all out. You have a helper. And finally, there's that closing image. "I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." In the ancient world, the right hand was everything. It was the hand of power, of authority, of making a covenant. It was the hand you used to fight, to bless, to save.
This isn't just a generic hand. It's the hand that holds the universe together. And that is the hand that is holding you. Here's what that means when you feel like you're losing your grip. The pressure is off. You don't have to hold on to God for dear life. The promise is that He is holding on to you. You are not the one doing the upholding. You are the one being upheld. It’s a profound shift in perspective. It moves the burden of your security from your own tired hands into his capable one.
So when one of those seventy thousand thoughts today is a thought of fear, or anxiety, or weakness... let this verse be your response. Let it be the anchor. The fear might be a real feeling. But the hand that holds you is an even realer reality.
