Here is a simple truth to hold this morning. The most well-known words about guidance were not written by a king in his palace, but by a shepherd in a field. Just last time, we spoke about trusting the path God lays for us, from Proverbs, even when we can't see the destination. Today’s reading gives us a different picture for that very same trust. It’s the one many of us know by heart. Let’s listen to it together now. This is Psalm 23. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Such beautiful, calming words.
Let’s sit with them for a moment. The first thing David says is, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." It’s easy to hear that and think it means we'll get everything we desire. But a shepherd doesn't give a sheep everything it could possibly want. A shepherd gives a sheep exactly what it NEEDS. Green grass. Clean water. A safe place to rest. That’s the first promise for your day. Not that you will lack nothing you can imagine, but that you will lack nothing you truly need. The strength you need for that difficult conversation… it will be there.
The patience you need for your family… it will be provided. The focus for the task at hand… you can trust it will come. It is a promise of provision, not of unlimited luxury. And it is ENOUGH. Then, David talks about where the shepherd leads. "Beside the still waters." "In paths of righteousness." This is about the pace of your life. A good shepherd knows that sheep can’t drink from a raging river. They need still, quiet water. So he leads them there. If your soul feels rushed and frantic today, this is a reminder that God’s pace for you is one of restoration.
He leads you to moments of quiet. He isn't trying to hurry you along a path of burnout. He is guiding you toward soul-restoring peace. The path might be long, but the pace is gentle. Your only job is to follow, to take the next right step, trusting that the path itself is righteous—that it is the right one for you, for His sake. And then we get to the heart of it. The part that speaks to our deepest fears. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me." Notice it doesn't say the shepherd helps us AVOID the valley.
It says he walks WITH us through it. The promise isn't a life free from shadows, free from fear, or free from valleys. That is not a realistic promise for this world. The promise is presence. The promise is that you are NEVER alone. Whatever your valley looks like today—a scary diagnosis, a financial worry, a broken relationship, a deep loneliness—the Shepherd is right there. Not ahead of you, not behind you, but right beside you. His rod, for protection, and His staff, for guidance, are there to comfort you.
The comfort isn't in the absence of danger. The comfort is in the presence of the Protector. He is WITH you. That is the anchor. And look at the very next image. After the darkest valley, He prepares a feast. A table, right in front of your enemies. He anoints your head with oil. Your cup overflows. This isn't just survival. This is honor. This is celebration. This is God saying, "This one is mine. And I will care for them extravagantly." So as you step into this day, hold onto that final line.
"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life." This isn't a hope. It isn't a wish. It's a sure thing. Goodness and mercy are not things you have to chase after. They are following you. They are pursuing you, every moment of this day. You are cared for. You are guided. And you are never, ever alone.
