Good morning. The average person makes about thirty-five thousand decisions in a single day. In the middle of all that noise, we talked last time about the quiet truth from Psalm 139—that even in a crowd, even with a thousand things pulling at you, you are completely seen and known by God. So what do we do with today? How do we face those thousands of moments, big and small? There's a simple, grounding instruction for that. It comes from the book of Romans, chapter twelve, verse twelve. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

That’s it. Just ten words. But those ten words are a compass for the entire day. Let's sit with them for a moment. First, "Be joyful in hope." This can sound a little strange, can't it? Joy and hope can feel distant, especially if you woke up with a heavy heart or a long list of worries. But this isn't talking about a bubbly, circumstantial happiness. This is a different kind of joy. It’s a deep, settled confidence that God is good, and that He is working all things for good, even the things we can't see or understand. Here’s what that means for your day.

It means your joy doesn't depend on getting good news. It doesn't depend on the meeting going well, or the traffic being light. Your joy is anchored in something much deeper—the promise of God's presence and His ultimate victory. It’s a quiet strength that says, no matter what happens today, my hope is secure. And because my hope is secure, I can find joy right here. Second, it says to be "patient in affliction." Now, the word "affliction" can sound dramatic. We think of major suffering. And it certainly includes that. But affliction is also the daily stuff.

It's the frustrating email. The unexpected bill. The difficult conversation you've been putting off. It's the friction of a world that is not yet as it should be. And our first instinct is to resist it. To get angry, or anxious, or just try to escape it. But the instruction here is different. It’s patience. And this isn't a passive, grit-your-teeth kind of waiting. It is an active, trusting endurance. It’s the belief that God is at work even in the delays, even in the struggles. So, here's what that means for you today. When you hit that moment of friction—and you will—see it as an invitation.

An invitation to practice patience. To trust that God is using even this annoyance, this delay, to shape you, to grow you, to make you more like Him. It transforms a roadblock into a training ground. And finally, "faithful in prayer." This is the one that holds the other two together. Hope and patience are not things we can just manufacture on our own. They are gifts we receive. And prayer is how we stay connected to the Giver. Being faithful in prayer doesn't mean you have to set aside an hour on your knees. It can be that, and that's a wonderful thing.

But being faithful is about the constancy of the conversation. It's the quick, silent "Help me, Lord" before you walk into a room. It's the "Thank you, God" when you notice something beautiful. It’s the ongoing dialogue that runs underneath all thirty-five thousand of your daily decisions. It’s what makes hope more than wishful thinking, and patience more than just self-control. It’s dependence. It's relationship. It's breathing in God's grace and breathing out your worries, your praise, your very life, all day long. The world will offer you a thousand other things to be faithful to today.

Your inbox. The news cycle. Your own anxieties. But this simple verse offers a better way. A truer rhythm. Be joyful in hope. Be patient in affliction. Be faithful in prayer. That is the work of today. And it is more than enough.
