good morning think for a moment about the sheer weight of a single day the endless list of tasks the expectations from others the noise from our screens the quiet anxieties we carry inside it is a remarkable load last time we were together we spoke of finding peace by trusting in god's grand overarching plan but today i want to bring it closer to focus on something much more immediate not the peace of a distant future but the rest we can find in this very moment right now there is an invitation waiting for you and it has been for two thousand years it comes from the gospel of matthew come to me all you that

are weary and are carrying heavy burdens and i will give you rest take my yoke upon you and learn from me for i am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls for my yoke is easy and my burden is light it is a beautiful promise isn't it but it can also feel a little confusing we are already tired already carrying too much and here jesus asks us to take on something else a yoke how can adding something new possibly lead to rest well the answer is simpler than it first appears we need to understand what a yoke truly is in the ancient world a yoke wasn't just a symbol

of labor it was a tool for partnership it was a wooden frame that joined two animals usually an older stronger ox with a younger one so they could pull a plow together the experienced animal would guide the novice bearing the main part of the weight teaching it how to walk how to work and this is the heart of the invitation jesus is not asking you to carry a new burden for him he is inviting you to be yoked with him to let him come alongside you in your life in your work in your worries he is the stronger partner who walks beside you takes the strain and shows you the way the burdens you carry

now are heavy awkward and ill fitting you are likely trying to pull the whole plow by yourself that is a truly exhausting way to live the yoke he offers is different the original greek word for easy can also mean well fitting or kind think of a perfectly tailored suit or shoes made just for you his yoke is custom made it doesn't chafe or wound it's designed for partnership and the burden is light because he is carrying the vast majority of it it is an extraordinary exchange your crushing unmanageable load for his light shared one

so what does this mean for you today as you sit here with your coffee thinking about the day ahead it means you have a choice you can pick up the same heavy burdens you carried yesterday the anxiety about the future the regret about the past the relentless pressure to be perfect to have it all figured out you can try once again to pull that plow all on your own and you will of course end the day just as exhausted as you began or you can accept the invitation you can consciously quietly hand those burdens over you can picture yourself taking off that heavy painful harness and letting him fit you with his the one that

means you are no longer walking alone this isn't about your work disappearing it is about who you work with finding this rest is not about doing nothing it is about doing everything from a new position of partnership and peace it is the rest that comes not from escape but from accompaniment the question of course is whether you are willing to make the exchange the invitation is open the rest is real and it is available to you at this very moment it is a remarkable story and it is a story you are invited to live in starting today
