A recent Gallup poll found that seventy-six percent of employees experience burnout on the job at least sometimes. Yesterday, we started our morning with a quiet reflection, looking for a way to feel grounded before the day began. That feeling of being overwhelmed and weary is exactly what Jesus speaks to in this passage from Matthew. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” That invitation is one of the most beautiful in all of scripture. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened. That’s the first part. It’s an open call to everyone who feels the weight of the world on their shoulders. The ones with the long to-do lists. The ones who are tired in their spirit. The ones who feel like they are just barely holding it all together. Jesus doesn't say, "Get your life in order and then come to me." He doesn't say, "Drop your burdens first and then you'll be ready." He says to come as you are, with all of it.

The weariness, the heavy loads, the burnout. Just come. And the promise for coming is rest. Not just a nap, or a day off. He promises rest for your soul. A deep, internal peace that the world can't give and can't take away. But then comes the part that can feel a little confusing. "Take my yoke upon you." A yoke is a wooden beam, used to join two animals together to pull a load. It sounds like more work. It sounds like another burden. Why would we trade our burdens for...

another piece of equipment? It seems counterintuitive. Here’s what that means for us, sitting here with our coffee, with the day already pressing in. A yoke was always made for two. An older, stronger, more experienced ox would be yoked with a younger, weaker one. The strong ox would bear the majority of the weight. The strong ox would set the pace. The strong ox would guide the younger one, teaching it how to pull the load efficiently, without wasting energy. When Jesus says, "Take my yoke upon you," He is not handing you a new set of tasks.

He is inviting you to be yoked with Him. He is the strong one. He is the one who knows the way. He is offering to carry the heavy end of the load. Your weariness comes from trying to pull the whole plow by yourself. His invitation is to let Him join you in the work. So what does this look like today, practically? When you look at your calendar, at the list of tasks and demands, it’s easy to feel that old familiar weight. The pressure to perform, to achieve, to handle it all on your own.

That is the world's yoke. And it is heavy. To take on Christ's yoke is to make a simple shift in your heart before you begin. It's a quiet prayer. "Jesus, I am yoked with you today. You set the pace. You carry the weight. My job is simply to walk with you." It means you approach your work not with frantic, solo energy, but with a calm, collaborative spirit. You learn from Him. He is gentle and humble in heart. He does not lead with harshness or impossible demands. He leads with grace.

The burden becomes light not because the work disappears, but because you are no longer carrying it alone. The yoke is easy not because the path has no challenges, but because the one walking beside you has already overcome the world. True rest is not the absence of activity. It is the presence of the right partner. Today, you do not have to prove your strength by carrying everything yourself. Your strength is found in walking beside the one who carries you.
