In 1952, a swimmer named Florence Chadwick attempted to swim twenty-six miles from Catalina Island to the California coast. She was a world-class athlete, but she gave up just a mile from shore, blinded by a thick fog. In our last time together, we talked about letting go of tomorrow's worries, like that fog. But what do we hold onto instead? The Apostle Paul gives us an answer. Here is Romans, chapter fifteen, verse thirteen. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Let’s sit with that for a moment. It’s a prayer, a blessing, and a promise all in one. And it starts with a name for God that we might need to hear today. It doesn’t say the God who has hope, or the God who gives hope. It says the God of hope. It’s his very nature. Hope isn't just something He does. It’s who He is. Like the sun isn't just a thing that gives off light; it is light. Here's what that means if you're waking up and the world feels gray. It means hope isn't a feeling you have to manufacture. It’s a person you can turn to.

When you feel like you have nothing left, you can reach for the source. The source is always there. The verse then gives us a beautiful sequence. It says God will fill you with all joy and peace... as you trust in Him. The joy and peace don't come first. The trust does. This is something a lot of people find confusing. We think we need to feel peaceful before we can really trust God. We wait for a sign, or for the anxiety to subside. But Paul turns that around. The trust is the key that unlocks the door. The joy and peace are what’s on the other side.

Here's what that means for your day. You don't have to feel it to do it. Trust, on a Tuesday morning, can be as simple as a quiet decision. It's the choice to believe this promise, even when your emotions are telling a different story. It’s whispering, "Okay God, I don't feel joyful. I don't feel peaceful. But I choose to trust you right now, in this moment." That is the beginning. And the result of that trust? It’s not just a little bit of hope to get you through. The verse says, "so that you may overflow with hope." Overflow.

It’s a powerful image. It’s not a cup that’s just full enough. It’s a cup that’s running over, spilling onto the table, making a mess of abundance. And crucially, it’s not by your own effort. It’s "by the power of the Holy Spirit." This takes all the pressure off. You aren't expected to generate this overflowing hope by sheer willpower. Your part is the trust. The small, difficult, moment-by-moment choice to lean on the God of hope. The power to overflow comes from Him. Here's what that means if you're facing a challenge today.

Your job is not to solve the problem with positivity. Your job is to stay connected to the power source. Trust is the plug. Hope is the electricity that flows from it, lighting up not just your own heart, but spilling out to warm the people around you. Let’s go back to Florence Chadwick, in the cold water, surrounded by fog. She told reporters later, "I’m not making any excuses. If I could have just seen the shore, I would have made it." The fog didn't just block her view. It stole her hope. Two months later, she tried again.

The fog was just as thick. But this time, she made it. When they asked her what was different, she said that this time, she swam with a clear mental image of the shoreline held firmly in her mind. The fog of worry, of doubt, of exhaustion… it will roll in. Some days it will be thicker than others. But the promise of this verse is our shoreline. The God of hope is not an abstract idea. He is a fixed point. A destination. A person waiting for you. Hold that image in your mind today. The fog will always roll in. But the shore is always there.
