Most of us put on clothes in the morning without a second thought. It's a routine, an automatic act that prepares us for the day ahead. In our last episode, we spoke about finding calm when facing life's anxieties. Today’s reading offers a powerful, practical way to do just that, using this simple morning ritual as a guide. Here is the reading for today from the book of Colossians, chapter three, verse twelve. Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. The key word in that verse is a verb: "clothe." It's an action. It’s something you DO. Paul isn't saying, "I hope you feel compassionate today." He isn't saying, "Try to be kind if the opportunity arises." He’s giving a direct instruction.

Before you face the world, put these things on. Intentionally. Like you would a shirt or a jacket. So what does that actually look like? It means treating these virtues not as moods that might visit you, but as choices you make before your day even gets started. It’s a spiritual preparation. Let's break it down. When you wake up, maybe even before your feet hit the floor, you can start. First, you clothe yourself with compassion. This is the decision to see people with grace today. You know you're going to encounter frustrating people. You know there will be misunderstandings. Putting on compassion means you decide, ahead of time, to look for the hurt or the stress behind someone’s sharp words.

It’s a shield against resentment. Here's what that means if you’re a parent. You know there will be chaos this morning. Putting on compassion means you’ve already decided to meet that chaos with a deep breath instead of a short temper. Next, you put on kindness. Kindness is compassion in motion. It's the small, tangible act. It might be the gentle word when you’re tempted to be critical. It might be letting another car into your lane during your commute. When you've clothed yourself with kindness in the morning, you're not searching for opportunities to be kind—you are simply living out what you're already wearing. Then comes humility, gentleness, and patience.

Think of these as the soft, comfortable underlayers. They are primarily for your OWN peace. Humility is the relief of not having to be the most important person in every room. It’s the freedom of not needing to win every argument. It quiets the anxious voice that says you always have to prove yourself. Here's what that means if you’re heading into a difficult meeting at work. Putting on humility beforehand means you can listen to criticism without feeling personally attacked. Putting on patience means you’ve already prepared your heart for delays or disagreements. You aren't just hoping for the best; you've dressed for the reality of a complicated world.

This practice transforms your day because it moves you from being reactive to being prepared. You are no longer at the mercy of your fleeting emotions or the day's circumstances. You have already decided who you will be. You have dressed your soul for the day ahead. It’s not about pretending to be something you’re not. It’s about intentionally choosing who you want to become, and practicing it, one morning at a time. The choice isn't made in the heat of a frustrating moment. It's made in the quiet of the morning. The clothes you pick from your closet prepare you for the weather outside. The virtues you put on in your heart prepare you for WHATEVER the day holds inside.

Choose them with intention.
