The World Health Organization estimates that over three hundred million people live with an anxiety disorder. In our last episode, number ninety-five, we held onto the promise from Jeremiah twenty-nine eleven — that God has a plan for us, a future and a hope. But knowing there's a good plan for the future doesn't always quiet the noise of right now. So today, we turn to a promise that speaks directly into that feeling. A promise for this very moment. Here is the reading from Isaiah, chapter forty-one, verse ten.
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. There are two parts to this promise, and both are for you today. First, there's the command, followed immediately by the reason. "Do not fear." That can feel impossible. But it isn't a command to simply stop feeling an emotion. Look at what comes next: "FOR I am with you." The reason you don't have to be mastered by fear is because you are not alone in it.
The Creator of the universe is present with you. Here's what that means for your day: when a wave of anxiety hits, your first move isn't to fight the feeling itself. It's to remember the fact of God's presence. The feeling is real, but the presence of God is MORE real. It changes the equation. It means you aren't facing this meeting, this difficult conversation, or this uncertainty by yourself. You are accompanied. The second part of the promise moves from presence to action. It says, "I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." This is SO important.
God's presence isn't passive. He isn't just watching from the passenger seat. He is actively involved. Notice the verbs: strengthen, help, uphold. These are words of power and support. Here's what that means when you feel weak or overwhelmed. You don't have to generate strength out of thin air. The promise is that strength will be GIVEN to you. Your job isn't to be strong; your job is to lean on the one who IS strong. To receive the help being offered. And that last image... "I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Think about what that means.
To uphold something is to keep it from falling. It's a picture of total support. It’s not a handshake. It’s a grip that WILL NOT let you go. It’s a promise that even if your own feet stumble, you will not be utterly cast down, because you are being held. Anxiety tells you that you are alone and about to fall. This promise says the exact opposite. It says you are held. Not by your own fragile grip on your circumstances, but by a righteous, powerful, and unshakable hand. The ground beneath your feet might feel unsteady today.
But the hand that holds you is not.
