In 1879, Thomas Edison first successfully tested a lightbulb that burned for over thirteen hours. Last time, we spoke about finding the strength to endure when life brings the overwhelming chaos of fire and flood. Today, we're going to look at a different kind of light… not a blaze, but a steady flame for the path right in front of us. From the book of Psalms, chapter one hundred nineteen, verse one hundred five. Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Let’s sit with that for a moment. A lamp for my feet.

A light on my path. Notice the verse gives us two distinct images. They sound similar, but they do two very different things. And we need both. First, a lamp for my feet. Imagine you're walking through a pitch-black room. You aren't holding a giant searchlight that illuminates everything. You're holding a small, simple lamp, maybe a candle or a small lantern. And you hold it down low. It doesn't show you the far wall. It doesn't show you the exit. It shows you just enough to see where to put your foot for the very next step.

It keeps you from tripping over the unseen obstacle right in front of you. Here's what that means for your day today. Sometimes the future feels like that dark room. We want the floodlights. We want the five-year plan. We want to see the destination and every stop along the way. And when we can't… we can feel paralyzed. Anxious. Afraid to move at all. This verse gives us permission to let that go. It says God's word, his presence, his wisdom… it's not always a blueprint for your whole life shown to you all at once.

Sometimes, it’s just a lamp for your feet. Just enough light for the next right thing. Enough clarity for the next conversation. Enough wisdom for the decision you have to make before lunchtime. You don't need to have everything figured out. You just need enough light for the next step. And you have it. Then there's the second part. A light on my path. This is different. This isn't the small lamp held down low. This is the light that shows the direction of the path itself. It might not illuminate every rock and root, but it shows you the way you're supposed to be going.

It draws a line between the safe path and the dangerous ditch. It provides the general direction. Here's what that means for your choices. While the lamp for your feet is about the immediate "what," the light on your path is about the long-term "why." God's word gives us principles for living. To act with love. To pursue justice. To walk in humility. To be people of integrity. These principles are the light on our path. When you're faced with a decision, and you're not sure what to do… you can ask, which of these options aligns with the path of love?

Which one is the path of honesty? Which one leads toward peace? The specific details might be foggy. That's okay. That's what the lamp for your feet is for. But the light on the path keeps you moving in the right direction. It provides the guardrails. It gives you a compass when you don't have a map. So often, we feel lost because we want the path to be a brightly lit highway. We want to see for miles. But the promise here is quieter. And maybe, much better. It’s a promise of intimate guidance. Just enough light for your next step, so you don't have to be afraid of falling.

And just enough of a glow on the path ahead, so you know you're still headed home. The darkness doesn't get the final say. Not when you have a lamp for your feet.
