Morning Light: Personal Reflections on Psalm 139

The human brain contains roughly eighty-six billion neurons, each one connected to thousands of others. In all of human history, there has never been another mind exactly like yours. Yesterday, we spoke about finding that morning light... that sense of a pastor's calm wisdom to start your day. Today, we're going to see just how deep that wisdom, and that light, can go. Here is the reading for this morning. It is Psalm one hundred and thirty-nine. You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.

You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you. If only you, God, would slay the wicked! Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty! They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name. Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord, and abhor those who are in rebellion against you? I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies. Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

That is a powerful, deeply personal piece of scripture. It can feel almost overwhelming to think about. So let's bring it down to just a few simple truths for your day ahead. First, you are completely known. The Psalm says, "You have searched me... you perceive my thoughts from afar." Here's what that means for you today. It means you can let go of the pressure to perform. In that meeting you're worried about, with that family member you struggle to connect with, even in the quiet moments alone... you are already fully seen. There is no pretense required.

There is an incredible peace in knowing that the God of the universe sees you, ALL of you, and is not surprised or disappointed. He simply knows. Second, you are constantly accompanied. The writer asks, "Where can I go from your Spirit?" And the answer is... nowhere. Here's what that means if you're facing something difficult. It means you are not walking into it alone. If today holds anxiety, or grief, or a challenge that feels too big, His presence is a settled fact. The Psalm says even darkness is not dark to Him. So whatever darkness you might feel today—confusion, fear, loneliness—it does not hide you from His sight.

It does not remove you from His care. He is there. And finally, you were purposefully made. "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Here's what that means as you get ready this morning. The person you are is not an accident. You were not mass-produced. You were knit together, woven together with intention and with love. Every detail, every quirk, every strength was seen and ordained before you took your first breath. Your life has a purpose written into its very fabric. So as you move through this day, hold onto this. You are not just being watched.

You are being held. The one who knows your every thought and numbers the hairs on your head is the same one who lays His hand upon you. Let the final words of the Psalm be your prayer today. Search me, God, and know my heart. Test my anxious thoughts. And lead me... just for today... lead me in the way everlasting.
