Morning Mercies: A Gentle Start with Scripture and Reflection

The sun rose this morning, just as it did yesterday. In our last time together, we spoke about easing our worries by placing our trust in God. Today's verse gives us the very foundation for that trust, a reason it can be renewed each day. Here is the reading from the book of Lamentations, chapter three, verses twenty-two and twenty-three. The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Let's sit with that for a moment. This isn't just a beautiful poem. It's a statement of fact, written during a time of immense sorrow and national crisis.

And it holds three truths that change everything about the day you have in front of you. First, the writer says the steadfast love of the Lord NEVER ceases. Think about the word steadfast. It means fixed, firm, unwavering. It doesn’t fluctuate based on our mood. It doesn’t diminish when we make a mistake. It wasn't stronger yesterday than it is today. Here’s what that means for you, right now. Whatever you left undone yesterday... whatever conversation went wrong... whatever personal failure is replaying in your mind... God’s love for you was not used up by it. It did not run out overnight.

It is a constant. It is the most stable thing in your entire life, and it’s fully present for you this morning. You are starting this day held by a love that does not quit. Second, the verse says His mercies never come to an end. Mercy is different from love. Mercy is not getting the negative consequences we deserve. It’s the act of being spared. And the promise here is that this well of mercy is bottomless. It never runs dry. You can’t exhaust it. So here’s what that means for your day. You don’t have to carry the weight of yesterday's judgment into today. You don’t have to beat yourself up for what you did or didn't do.

God’s mercy met you the moment you woke up. It’s a clean slate. Not because you earned it, but because His supply of forgiveness and compassion is literally endless. That is an incredible relief. It means you can breathe. You can let go of the scorecard you keep on yourself, because God has already thrown it away. And that leads to the third, and maybe most powerful, part of this promise. They are NEW every morning. This is the part that feels almost too good to be true. His love is constant, His mercy is endless, but the experience of it is fresh... every... single... day. It’s not leftover mercy from last Tuesday.

It’s not refurbished grace. It’s brand new. Custom-made for this day. For THESE challenges. For THIS version of you. Here’s what that means for whatever you are facing. The strength you need for that difficult meeting... the patience you need for your family... the hope you need to just get through the next few hours... it was prepared specifically for today. You don't have to operate on yesterday's spiritual fumes. God knew everything this Wednesday would hold for you, and He prepared a fresh supply of exactly what you would need to navigate it. Your portion of mercy and strength for today is available RIGHT now.

It is not waiting for you to be perfect. It is simply waiting to be received. Great is your faithfulness. That last line isn’t a request. It’s a conclusion. Because God’s love is constant, and His mercy is endless, and His provision is new each day... the ONLY possible response is to recognize His profound faithfulness. He keeps His promises. Always. Yesterday, with all its worries and its outcomes, is over. It is finished. God’s mercy for today has already arrived. It was here before you even opened your eyes. Your task is not to earn it, or strive for it, or worry if there will be enough.
